Xatu (Japanese: ネイティオ Natio) is a dual-type Psychic/Flying Pokémon.

It evolves from Natu starting at level 25.

Biology

Physiology

Xatu are green condor-like Pokémon with long, red-and-black tipped white wings that cover most of the Pokémon's front. Underneath its wings are designs that resemble red-colored eyes. Along with its main green coloration, Xatu's designs have accentuations of black, yellow, and red. Notably, its head resembles much of its pre-evolution's round body, with the exception of a longer, slightly hooked beak and dual, longer feather crests. Xatu's feet have only two toes, one in front and one in back. Xatu's design is similar to a totem pole or a kachina doll.

Gender differences

A male has one extra set of yellow stripes.

Special abilities

Like most Psychic-type Pokémon, it possess psychic abilities. However, its specialty is that it has the ability to see into the future with the right eye, and the past with the left.

Behavior

Xatu tend to stand still all day. Many theories have been thought up to explain this behavior. One such theory explains that it keeps seeing visions of the past and future, and that it doesn't move due to fears of these future visions coming true. Although unable to communicate telepathically one might understand its thoughts by looking at its wings.

Habitat

Xatu is believed to be native to South America, although it can be found near ruins along with its pre-evolution in Johto.

Major appearances

Xatu first appeared under the ownership of Calista, a girl who could predict the future in Xatu the Future.

Xatu was seen in Me, Myself and Time under the ownership of another girl named Calista who traveled back in time to give her younger self a message.

Minor appearances

Xatu was seen starring in an outer-space version of the movie "Titanic" in Lights, Camerupt, Action!.

Xatu, along with three Natu, was used to signal the start of a Water Pokémon race in the movie Pokémon Heroes.

A Xatu made a very brief appearance in the opening of Destiny Deoxys and Lucario and the Mystery of Mew.

Another Xatu also appeared in Historical Mystery Tour! under the ownership of a Clown.

Trivia

  • Xatu shares the same species names with Flygon. They are both known as Mystic Pokémon in English, and Spirit Pokémon in Japanese.
  • Xatu's Silver, FireRed, and SoulSilver Pokédex entries state that it is involved in South American myths, which is a connection between the Pokémon world and the real world.
  • The "eyes" on Xatu's wings were removed from its Crystal sprite, making it one of the few Pokémon to have different sprites for each of the Generation II games.

Origin

It seems to be based on a Resplendent Quetzal with design elements from a Native American totem or Kachina.

Name origin

Xatu may derive from X (as in exotic, referring to its appearance) and Atu (the first man in Samoan mythology).

Natio may be a corruption of native.
