'''Whitney''' (Japanese: '''アカネ''' ''Akane'') is the [[Gym Leader]] of [[Goldenrod City]]'s [[Gym]], known officially as the [[Goldenrod Gym]]. She hands out the {{Badge|Plain}} to {{pkmn|Trainer}}s who defeat her. She is a young woman who uses {{type|Normal}} {{OBP|Pokémon|species}}.

Whitney uses the {{type|Normal}}, and although she only began battling a little while ago, her talent attracted the [[Pokémon League]] to choose her as a Gym Leader. Her Gym is filled with other young girls like herself, who use cute Normal-type Pokémon like {{p|Meowth}}, and is shaped like a {{p|Clefairy}}. While in {{game2|Gold|Silver|Crystal}} all challengers have to do to reach Whitney is navigate through the Gym's maze puzzle, Whitney is initially absent from the Gym in {{game|HeartGold and SoulSilver|s}}. She can be found in Goldenrod's [[Goldenrod Radio Tower|Radio Tower]] attempting to win a {{DL|Pokégear|Radio|Radio Card}}. If the player helps her, she will return to the Gym. Despite this act of kindness, she will throw a temper tantrum upon defeat and refuse to give the {{Badge|Plain}}. A Gym Trainer will tell the player that she will eventually calm down. Once calmed down, however, she will give not only the Badge, but {{TM|45|Attract}} as well. Apparently, this move is perfect for her, because it makes full use of a Pokémon's cuteness.

Whitney also makes an appearance in [[Pokémon Stadium 2]]'s Johto [[Gym Leader Castle]]. This is the only game in which she appears and uses Pokémon of a type other than {{t|Normal}} (she does use a {{p|Nidorina}} in her {{pkmn|anime}} appearance, however)

In Whitney's first appearance, she ran up to [[Ash's Pikachu]] after he bumped into her {{p|Clefairy}}. She took care of Pikachu by giving him a kiss on the head, much to his amusement. Whitney then took {{Ash}} and {{ashfr}} to the Goldenrod Galleria by taking the [[Goldenrod Tunnel|Underground Path]] as a shortcut there. However, they stumbled across many areas that they didn't want to go to. After a while, they went to a restaurant to eat some hamburgers. Later, Whitney encountered {{TRT}} and they stole her Clefairy. The trio got chased down to the [[Magnet Train|Magnet Train Station]]. They got on the Magnet Train but were stopped by Whitney, Ash and his friends. Team Rocket then blasted off with the train, empty-handed. After learning Whitney is the Goldenrod Gym Leader, {{Ash}} challenged her to a Gym match. During the match, he managed to defeat her first two Pokémon but was unable to stop her {{p|Miltank}}, who constantly used {{m|Rollout}} to deflect attacks.

After Ash's defeat, Whitney invited him and his friends to her Uncle [[Milton]]'s dairy farm, where many Miltank are raised to produce milk for consumption. Ash, {{an|Brock}}, and {{an|Misty}} spent the day taking care of the dairy's many Miltank until {{TRT}} arrived with a barrel-shaped robot. During his fight against them, Ash came up with a strategy to defeat Miltank and asksed Whitney for another match. He used {{AP|Totodile}} and {{AP|Cyndaquil}} to slow here down, then had {{AP|Pikachu}} knock her out. Though the match had taken place outside of the Gym, Whitney accepted her defeat and awarded Ash the Plain Badge.

She made a small cameo along with [[Morty]] in ''[[DP147|Bagged Then Tagged!]]'' when it was revealed that {{an|Lyra}}'s next Gym challenge was supposed to be either one of them.

|desc=Whitney's {{p|Clefairy}} first appeared when {{AP|Pikachu}} accidentally knocked into Clefairy. After shopping, Whitney found that Clefairy was missing. It had been caught by Team Rocket. Then, at the Magnet Train platform, it used Metronome which turned into Gust, which freed Pikachu.

It was used again as the second Pokémon in the Gym battle against {{Ash}}, were it went up against {{AP|Cyndaquil}}. It began with using Metronome. However, it turned into Splash. Then, Cyndaquil used another {{m|Flamethrower}}, forcing Whitney to withdraw it from the match.

|desc={{p|Nidorina}} was the first Pokémon used by Whitney in the Gym battle, battling against Cyndaquil. However, none of her attacks were a match for Cyndaquil's Flamethrower. Nidorina was soon defeated by Cyndaquil's second Flamethrower.

 

Unlike Whitney's other Pokémon, Nidorina isn't a {{type|Normal}} Pokémon.

|desc=Whitney's {{p|Miltank}} was the last Pokémon used in the Gym battle. She managed to defeat Cyndaquil by using {{m|Rollout}} continuously. Ash then used {{AP|Totodile}}, telling him to use {{m|Water Gun}}; however, he did not slow Miltank down. With another Rollout, Totodile was knocked out. Pikachu was then used to use {{m|Thunderbolt}} on Miltank, but it was ineffective. Pikachu was defeated by the second turn of Rollout.

In {{pkmn|manga}} series [[Ash and Pikachu]], based on the {{pkmn|anime}}, {{Ash}} battles against Whitney for the {{badge|Plain}} in ''[[SP02|The Beginning Of Good Luck?! Pokémon Fortune Telling]]''. In Ash and Pikachu, Whitney has [[Whitney's grandmother|a grandmother]], who runs a fortune telling booth.

Whitney is an actress. She is also good friends with [[DJ Mary]]. She is portrayed as a slightly more arrogant and temperamental person than from other appearances.

 

She met {{adv|Gold}} while performing at the [[Goldenrod Radio Tower|Radio Tower]] in Goldenrod City. The two clashed and ended up competing against each other in a bike race. Whitney was initially in the lead, until she was blocked off by a large tree. The tree turned out to be a {{p|Sudowoodo}} hiding from a {{p|Rhydon}}. Whitney was then kidnapped by the Rhydon as she tried to flee and broke her arm. Gold caught Sudowoodo and defeated the Rhydon. In the Chuang Yi version of the manga, she is mistakenly translated as the Gym Leader of [[Cherrygrove City]], rather than Goldenrod.

Whitney isn't a strong Gym Leader, according to {{p|Suicune}}. Whitney is the only [[Johto]] Gym Leader, besides [[Pryce]], that Suicune didn't challenge for a right to be its partner in the fight against the [[Masked Man]]. [[Misty]] also easily defeated her in the opening ceremony of the [[Pokémon League]].

She was first seen in the bike race, where her having it use {{m|Rollout}} on Gold caused her to be in the lead.{{tt|*|considered cheating with bad sportsmanship}} The race was halted when a [[Gold (Adventures)#Sudobo|Sudowoodo]] and a {{p|Rhydon}} were blocking the way. Mil Mil tried to defeat the Rhydon but got defeated, and Whitney had her arm broken after it kidnapped her. Gold catches the Sudowoodo and takes down the Rhydon himself.&nbsp;Mil Mil reappeared when she was battling {{p|Suicune}}, or rather an animated statue imitation. She was no match for it despite being Whitney's strongest Pokémon, although with [[Pryce]]'s tips they succeeded in pinning it down.&nbsp;She was used in a battle against Misty in the tournament in which Mil Mil was defeated easily by the latter's {{TP|Misty|Starmie}}.}}

|desc=Smea-Smea, a {{p|Smeargle}}, was a Pokémon that belonged to Whitney. She gave it to her good friend [[DJ Mary]] prior to Gold's arrival. It was known for bothering him all the time by splattering paint over his face when they first met, which angered him. Gold and his Pokémon chased after the Smeargle with his Pokémon but it was too fast for them. He chased it all the way to Goldenrod's Radio Tower where he found out that it belonged to Whitney and DJ Mary.&nbsp;Smea-Smea appeared again along with Mary while Whitney was battling Suicune. It did not do much, but was able to provide a counter against its ice reflection tactic by leaving a smudge on its face.

 

Smea-Smea was also seen mimicking {{p|Entei}}'s {{m|Flamethrower}} attack via Sketch, which as it turns out allowed it to copy its inherent attributes as well (meaning that while other {{type|Fire}} attacks wouldn't melt the [[Masked Man]]'s ice soldiers, Smeargle's flames would).

 

Smea-Smea was later seen returned to Whitney's possession in the {{chap|HeartGold & SoulSilver}} where Whitney used it to smear paint on Gold's face after he shoved a RageCandyBar down her throat.

In [[Pokémon Gold & Silver: The Golden Boys]], Whitney first appears in ''[[GB08|For Pikachu's Sake!! The Search For The Missing Farfetch'd]]'' where she tags along with {{GnB|Gold}} to find a missing {{p|Farfetch'd}}. She has a battle with Gold where she sends out her Ditto and Miltank and defeats him. Whitney decides to take away his {{p|Pikachu}} for the time being as she thought it was a cute Pokémon. She begins traveling with him and follows him on his journey. She watches him when he is fighting his rival at a tournament. Even though Gold was defeated by Black, Black's tactics were ruled unfairly which actually made Gold the winner. Whitney did not return Pikachu until he defeated her later. Whitney traveled with him up until ''[[GB14|Let's Fight! The Mini Pokémon Tournament]]'' in which she says farewell to him and leaves. Whitney loves cute Pokémon and is very encouraging of Gold as he progresses through his journey.

|desc={{p|Cleffa}} is Whitney's Pokémon that is usually seen out of its Poké Ball. It helped Whitney search for a {{p|Farfetch'd}}. When they found it, Cleffa sang a lullaby to place it to sleep. Cleffa was responsible for taking the SquirtBottle to awaken Sudowoodo that Gold caught later on.
