Whismur (Japanese: ゴニョニョ Gonyonyo) is a Normal-type Pokémon.

It evolves into Loudred starting at level 20, which evolves into Exploud starting at level 40.

Biology

Physiology

Whismur have a spherical, mauve-colored body with two stubby arms and two round feet which lack toes and are tipped with yellow. Their ear-covers are long and rabbitlike with yellow tips, and the actual ear openings can be seen as a hole at the base of each ear cover. Whismur have a small, plug-like tail with a hole in it and a yellow crescent marking above it. Their eyes appear as "cross"- or "plus sign"-like black marks, and they have simple, wide mouths usually shown open.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Whismur breathe through their ear canals and therefore can scream continuously since they don't have to breathe through their mouth. For this reason, they stop screaming if their ear covers are shut.

Behavior

Normally Whismur make murmurs that are only barely audible, but they are scared very easily, and can scream as loudly as the engine noise of a jet plane in an attempt to scare off other Pokémon. By screaming, they can scare themselves into crying harder, eventually exhausting themselves to the point of sleep.

Habitat

Whismur like tall grass, but prefer caves like the Desert Underpass and the Rusturf Tunnel.

FireRed It usually murmurs, but starts crying loudly if it senses danger. It stops when its ear covers are shut.

Trivia

  • Whismur's tail resembles an input or output port on an electronic amplifier. This could be a reference to the extremely loud voice Whismur uses when it is frightened.
  • Whismur's base stats all rise by 20 when it evolves into Loudred.

Origin

Whismur is based on a rabbit or a stuffed animal, and its ears resemble earmuffs which are used to protect one's ears against loud noises.

Name origin

Whismur is a combination of whisper and murmur, both of which mean speaking in a very soft voice.

Gonyonyo is derived from ごにょごにょ gonyogonyo, the sound of mumbling, murmuring, or whispering.
