Waterfall (Japanese: たきのぼり Waterfall Climb) is a damage-dealing Template:Type2 move introduced in Generation I. It is HM07 in Generations II, III and IV, and HM05 in Generation V.

Prior to Generation II, it was the signature move of the Goldeen evolution family.

Effect

In battle

Generation I-III

Waterfall does damage and has no secondary effect.

Generation IV-V

Along with damage, Waterfall now also has a 20% chance of causing the target to flinch.

Outside of battle

Generation II and on

Waterfall has effect outside battle, that allow players to climb waterfalls. Note that in Generations II and III, the HM move Waterfall is not required to go down waterfalls, whereas in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum versions, it is required. This is probably to prevent players from getting stuck from accidentally going down a waterfall and being unable to get back up. Despite this, in HeartGold and SoulSilver versions, it is no longer required to go down waterfalls, likely because of a lack of accessible down falls without first climbing up one.

Trivia

  • Waterfall is one of four HM moves that Pokémon can learn by level-up. Fly has been a level-up move of Salamence and Rayquaza since Generation III, while Whirlpool and Dive were able to be learned by level-up after their HM status was revoked, and continued to be able to be learned in this way even when their HM status was reinstated.
  • In Generation I, Waterfall was Goldeen and Seaking's signature move. These Pokémon remain the only ones to learn the move by level-up.
  • Waterfall was the first move to gain HM status in a generation after it was introduced, doing so in Generation II. Only Rock Smash shares this trait, though it is no longer an HM.
  • In Black and White, Waterfall's in-Bag HM description differs from its description on its user's attack listing. In the bag, it says "The user charges the target at an awesome speed. It can also be used to climb a waterfall.", while in the move description it says "The user charges at the target and may make it flinch. It can also be used to climb a waterfall."
