Wally (Japanese: ミツル Mitsuru) is one of the two rival characters in Ruby and Sapphire, Emerald, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire, the other being Brendan/May. He is the first rival not to be the player's first battle, and the first rival not to receive a starter Pokémon from the selection of starters presented to the player. In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Wally in his later battles possesses a Gallade that can Mega Evolve with his handmade wooden Mega Pendant, which holds his Key Stone. The Mega Pendant is shaped like a Gallade's head.

Wally is a young, sickly boy who just moved to Petalburg City. Despite his illness, his dream is to train Pokémon. In his room, in Petalburg City, there are a lot of books about how to raise and battle with Pokémon covered in sticky notes, a notebook which has been written and erased again and again and a terrestrial globe with pins in places in the Kalos and Unova regions, suggesting that he has been wanting to go outside and catch Pokémon for a long time.

His illness is never explained, but his symptoms appear to clear up in clean air, suggesting that it is either acute bronchitis or asthma.

In Pokémon Ruby, and Sapphire, Emerald, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire, Wally is a sickly young boy who first appears in Petalburg City, asking Norman, the Petalburg Gym Leader, to help him catch a Pokémon before he moves to Verdanturf Town to live with his aunt and uncle. Norman asks his child, the player, to assist Wally and loans Wally a Zigzagoon. Using this Pokémon, Wally is able to capture a Ralts. In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, after catching his Ralts, Wally will give the player a new app for their PokéNav as thanks, the PokéNav Plus.

Wally shows up again later in Mauville City, pleading with his uncle to let him challenge Wattson. He battles the player to prove his strength, but loses. He decides his uncle is right but says he will train to become stronger.

Wally eventually runs away from home and challenges the player at Victory Road, seemingly recovered from his illness. In Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, he remains at Victory Road and can be rematched after the player has entered the Hall of Fame.

In the remakes of Ruby and Sapphire, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Wally's Ralts eventually evolves into a Gallade instead of a Gardevoir. At some point in the game, Wally also obtains a Key Stone and Key Stone, allowing his Gallade to Mega Evolve. He is also revealed to have obtained all eight badges before the player meets Wally at Victory Road as he becomes a Certified Trainer at every Gym. The player can follow Wally's progress on the Hoenn News Network and see his name on the Gym statues starting from the time Mt. Chimney is explored.

Later on, Wally arrives at the Battle Resort with an S. S. Ticket from Norman and grows stronger through his time at the Battle Resort. :"<player>, hello! After Rusturf Tunnel went through, Wanda's been very happy!"
* After receiving the Heat
:"Oh, <player>! I…I left my uncle's place in Verdanturf without telling anyone. I wonder if he's furious with me… <player>, you understand how I feel, don't you?"
* After defeating Shelly at the Weather Institute
:"<player>? It's me, Wally! The world of trainers is amazing! When I have my Pokémon with me, all sorts of people say hi! It's as if everyone's getting connected through Pokémon!"
* After defeating Maxie at the Magma Hideout
:"<player>? It's awesome! That Ralts we caught together? It evolved, <player>! Maybe I'm talented…Oh, but I shouldn't get a big head like that! After all it's the Pokémon that should be praised!"
* After defeating Wally at Victory Road
:"Oh, <player>! Before I met you, I hardly ever left my house…But now, I'm on my adventure with my very own Pokémon…<player>…Thank you…"

;Petalburg Gym
*First time
:"Um… E-excuse me… I…I'd like to get a Pokémon, please…"
:"Y-yes… I'm supposed to go stay with my relatives in Verdanturf Town for a while. But I thought I might be lonely by myself, so I wanted to bring a Pokémon with me. But I've never caught a Pokémon by myself… I'm not sure if I can."
:"Oh, wow… Your Pokémon, sir?"
:"Th-thank you, Mr. Norman! Um…<player>? You will… You will come with me, right?"

*After catching tutorial
:"Yes, it did! Thank you! Let me give you back your Pokémon, sir."
:"And you, <player>… Thank you so much for coming with me. It was all thanks to you two that I was able to catch Ralts. My very own Ralts… I will always, always treasure it! …Oh! I know! It's not much of a thank-you, but…um…<player>? Will you let me see your PokéNav Plus for a second?"
:"OK, that and…ummm…there!"
:"I read in a book how you can use the PlayNav to take care of your Pokémon and train them. And there's even supposed to be this thing called the PSS, where you can meet up with other Trainers and battle friends and more! I've wanted to have my own Pokémon for so long…and do all those kinda things together… So I've had all these kinds of apps installed on my PokéNav Plus for ages! Embarrassing, huh? I'm going to try my best together with Ralts. You do your best, too, <player>! Oh, but my mom's waiting for me. I've got to get going! I hope we'll meet again, <player>! And you, too, Mr. Norman!"

;102
:"<player>… Pokémon hide in tall grass like this, don't they?"
:"P-please stay there to watch and see if I can catch one properly."
:"Wh-whoa!"

*During catching tutorial
:"I'm su-supposed to try to weaken the Pokémon before I throw my Poké Ball, right? I read that in a book recently."

*After catching tutorial
:"I did it… It's my… My own Pokémon! Thanks so much, <player>! Let's head back to the Gym!"

;Mauville City
*First time entering the city
:"Wow! So this is Mauville City!"
:"No, thank you! I want to challenge the Gym right away!"
:"Let me see… I'm pretty sure the Gym is…"
:"Yup! Straight ahead this way! Just through the inner courtyard!"

*Front of Mauville Gym
:"Uncle, I'm begging you! I want to challenge this Gym to see how much stronger I've become! Please! You'll let me, won't you?"
:"I'm not pushing it! If it's me and my Ralts, we can beat anyone!"
:"Ah! <player>! Ralts and I have gotten a lot stronger since we first met. Growing together! I want to prove that to you and my uncle both, <player>."
:"Please…help me once more… And have a battle with me!"
::Yes: "Thank you, <player>. OK. Here we go!"
::"We're going to win this, Ralts! We have to!"
::No: "But if you won’t battle against me, <player>… I don’t think my uncle will believe that I've really gotten stronger."

:* After refusing and talking to again
::"<player>, please! Battle with me!"

*Being defeated
:"Wow… You really are strong, <player>!"

*After being defeated
:"Uncle… I'll go back to Verdanturf…"
:"<player>, thank you… Being a Trainer is tough, isn't it? It's not enough just to battle with your Pokémon. I can't become a true Trainer like that… Not really…"
:"…"
:"…Yes, Uncle."
:"<player>…"
:"I… I'm definitely… I'm going to get stronger. Much, much stronger! I feel like I learned a lot from just one Pokémon battle with you… About my own limits…and Ralts's…"
:"So…um… That's why… <player>… If it's all right… Could I…"
:"Could I call you…my r-riv—"
:"Ah, never mind! S-sorry! It was nothing! Please forget about it!"
:"Guh…good-bye!"

*Arriving after obtaining the Balance Badge
:"Phew… It's actually pretty far, isn't it? All the way here to Mauville…"
:"So that must be 118 ahead… I wonder what kind of Pokémon I'll meet there. I can't wait to find out!"
:"I'll see you later, <player>! I'm going straight to Route 118! Let's definitely have a battle next time we meet! It's a promise, OK? And you can't break a promise!"

;Petalburg City
*First time
:"Ah! <player>! Mr. Norman!"
:"I haven't seen thw two of you in some time. What a coincidence! I just came back to my parents' house to grab something I'd forgotten."
:"R-really? You really think so? Hehe… Thank you! That's so nice of you to say!"
:"Yes, sir! I will do my best to become as strong as <player>, sir!"
:"I guess I had better start out, then. I'm off for now, Dad! See you next time!"
:"Um. Come on, <player>! Let's go together!"
:"OK! We're off!"
:"Mr. Norman told us to keep going beyond 00aeef. didn't he… Let me check my PokéNav Plus…"
:"00aeef is the one east of Mauville City, huh? <player>! Since we're both here anyway, let's go to Mauville together! I'm definitely planning on going to check out Route 118 like your dad said!"

;Victory Road
* Before battle
:"Ah! <player>! I bet you must be surprised to see me in a place like this! That promise that we made back then… Thank you for keeping your end of it. It was really all thanks to you that I could make it this far, <player>. It was only because I lost to you back then that I could become even stronger. I'm sure that you and your Pokémon must have had to overcome a lot, too… To make it all the way here. Right, <player>? Everyone's grown so much… And now we'll get to see just what we all can do. Standing here facing you again gives me chills… …But I won't give up! I won't lose anymore. My Pokémon have given me the courage and strength to fight. I have to win for their sake! So get ready… Here I come!"

* Being defeated
:"… I've lost…"

* After being defeated
:"… … Arghhh!!! … … …Hah. <player>, you… And your Pokémon, too… Thank you for not holding back when you battled against us… For not holding back when you beat us… And… Gallade… Everyone…. Thank you so much… I feel like I've been able to take another step forward thanks to you! Oh! I know! I'll give you this to keep. I hope it will always remind you of your battle with me… and with Gallade and the rest of my team. If you have a male Kirlia as one of your partners, <player>, I hope that you might use that Dawn Stone on it for me. I couldn't beat you this time, <player>. But I'll stay here and continue training. And one day… Look out! I swear I'll catch up to you one day! When I do, promise we'll battle again! That's a promise I intend to live up to!"

;Battle Resort
* Upon entering the Battle Resort for the first time
:"Ah! <player>! So you came, too! Mr. Norman actually gave me a ticket as well. I just got here a little while ago. So this is the Battle Resort… A tropical paradise that only the lucky few get to visit…"
:"I'm getting pumped just standing here! Let's check it out!"
:"I'm s-sorry, ma'am, sir…Running into you like that…"

* After encountering Team Aqua/Magma
:"Wow… Incredible…"
:"Challenge?"
:"Oh, is that right? But where can we battle?"
:"No, I don't…"
:"Thank you very much. We will be sure to do that!"
:"The Battle Maison…"
:"I'm curious about what kind of place it is, but I think I'll take a look around the island first. I've never been so far from home before, and I've never visited anything like a resort! So I'll be off exploring, <player>… But I'll see you later! I hope we can battle again, here in this resort!"

;Battle Maison
* When selected for the Multi Battle challenge
:"I hope you can bear with me, <player!> I'm going to take this chance to study how a Champion fights from right up close!"

* After ending the Multi Battle challenge
:"O-oh… That's too bad… I hope you'll ask me again someday…"

* After 20 consecutive wins at the Multi Battle challenge
:"Thank you so much, <player>! Me and my Pokémon both gained a lot from being able to fight beside you!"

* After losing the Multi Battle challenge
:"I'm s-sorry… I guess me and my team just got in your way…"

* After the monument is built
:"This monument was built to commemorate you, wasn't it? That's amazing! You really are Hoenn's top Trainer, <player>."
:"Umm… You are…?"
:"That many?!"
:"I see…"
:"So there are still other Trainers who are that passionate about Pokémon battles… Wow! I feel like trying harder seeing that. I'm sure I can still become stronger! I'll see you later then, <player>! I'm going off to train some more!"

* Before battle (first time)
:"<player>! How are you doing? I've been training nonstop—so I was taking a short rest. Since I managed to run into you, <player>, it seems like this will be a perfect chance to see how much I've improved!"

* Being defeated (first time)
:"Ugh. So this is my limit."

* If talked to after being defeated
:"I knew my team makeup was still off. Then…I guess I need to take this guy out. No, if I do that, I'll be wide open for… Hmm… Then if I replace this move here… Yeah… Yeah, that should do it! Oh! Excuse me! I couldn't help myself! But you're just as brilliant in battle as ever, <player>! Still, don't you count on me just losing to you forever. I've met a lot of people who have helped me grow since coming to the Battle Resort, and it has reminded me all over again how much fun it is to really go all out in battle! Thanks again, <player>! Let's battle again sometime!"

* Before battle (rematch)<!--Is this quote repeated or changed in the following matches?-->
:"<Player>! Please see how much my training has accomplished! This time my team is the best it can be!"

* Being defeated (rematch)
:"Gaaahhh!"

* If giving the player an Ability Capsule
:"Hah…hah… Here, <player>… Take this, hah, with my thanks."

* If talked to after being defeated (rematch)
:"Hah…hah… Maybe I need to start again from scratch. But you performed as well as I'd expect, <player>! You even beat the best team I could put together! And, well, Pokémon battling really is great, isn't it? When I get to spend every day training and battling like this, I really can't help thinking, so… I enjoy every day so much that I really think I finally found where I belong. I…I'm going to keep getting stronger! So please battle with me again!"

Delta Episode
* Inside the house
:"Who in the world would steal my Key Stone…"

* End of episode
:"I'll be leaving, then. Good-bye, Mom! Bye, Dad!"
:"Of course! My Pokémon and I are fit for anything! See, <player> got my Key Stone back for me. And Mr. Norman gave me a ticket to a resort that sounds really neat. I can't wait to go and check it out!"

Trivia
Trivia
* Wally is the first rival:
** Seen catching their first Pokémon in the wild.
** Not seen in the player's hometown at any point in the games.
** Not to be the player's first Trainer battle.
* Wally and the player's counterpart (either Brendan or May) are the first rivals:
** To appear as multiple rivals in the same game.
** Not to be named by the player.
* Wally is the only rival whose first Pokémon evolves into different branched evolutions depending on the games.
* His illness is never explained, but his symptoms appear to clear up in clean air, suggesting that it is either acute bronchitis or asthma.
* In Ruby and Sapphire, Wally challenges the player near the exit of Victory Road, whereas in Emerald, he is met after crossing the first bridge. Despite this, the rematches with him occur near the end of Victory Road, regardless of the game.
* In Ruby and Sapphire, Wally challenges the player near the exit of Victory Road, whereas in Emerald, he is met after crossing the first bridge. Despite this, the rematches with him occur near the end of Victory Road, regardless of the game.
* In the Generation III games, it is possible for the capture tutorial to end with Ralts fainting. This can only happen if Zigzagoon is generated with 11 Attack, and the wild Ralts has a Nature that lowers Defense, an IV of 3 or less in HP, and 5 or less in Defense. With all this, Zigzagoon can do a maximum of 10 damage with its first Tackle, and after Growl is used on it, 7 with its second. This makes for a total of 17 damage, just enough to knock out Ralts. However, the game continues on as if it had been caught. The probability of this occurring is (182/800)*(4/25)*(4/32)*(6/32)*(5/16)*(7/16), or about 1 in 8574.

Wally (Japanese: ミツル Mitsuru) is one of the two rival characters in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, Emerald, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire, the other being Brendan/May. In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Wally in his later battles possesses a Gallade that can Mega Evolve with his handmade wooden Mega Pendant, which holds his Key Stone. The Mega Pendant is shaped like a Gallade's head.

Wally is a young, sickly boy who lives in Petalburg City.

In the core series games

Wally at the Petalburg Gym

Wally at the Mauville Gym

Wally at Victory Road

In Pokémon Ruby, and Sapphire, Emerald, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire, Wally is a sickly young boy who first appears in Petalburg City, asking Norman, the Petalburg Gym Leader, to help him catch a Pokémon before he moves to Verdanturf Town to live with his aunt and uncle. This is because Verdanturf is in a remarkably clean area and might improve Wally's sickness. Norman asks his child, the player, to assist Wally and loans Wally a Zigzagoon. Using this Pokémon, Wally is able to capture a Ralts. In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, after catching his Ralts, Wally will give the player a new app for their PokéNav as thanks, the PlayNav.

Wally shows up again later in Mauville City, pleading with his uncle to let him challenge Wattson. He battles the player to prove his strength but loses.

At some point in the game, Wally also obtains a Key Stone and Mega Pendant, allowing his Gallade to Mega Evolve. He is also revealed to have obtained all eight badges before the player meets Wally at Victory Road as he becomes a Certified Trainer at every Gym. The player can follow Wally's progress on the Hoenn News Network and see his name on the Gym statues starting from the time Mt. Chimney is explored.

In the Delta Episode, Wally is being harassed by CourtneyOR/MattAS who attempts to steal his Key Stone. Wally thanks the player when the player defeats Courtney/Matt, but reveals that his Key Stone had already disappeared before the Admin had arrived. At the end of the Delta Episode, Wally leaves his home again, with his Key Stone having been returned by the player.

Later on, Wally arrives at the Battle Resort with an S. S. Ticket from Norman and grows stronger through his time at the Battle Resort. Wally re-battles the player at the Battle Maison but can only be battled again once the player has beaten one of the Battle Chatelaines in a Super Battle. Wally can also be selected as a partner for the Multi Battle challenge at the Battle Maison. Through his time at the Battle Maison, Wally is revealed to have met a lot of people who have helped him grow as a Trainer. He is revealed to be a strategic, enthusiastic Trainer who studies various move combinations and the allocation of base stats, who is willing to change his team make-up and Pokémon's moves to become stronger.

In Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon, Wally appears in Alola's Battle Tree as an opponent the player can battle and subsequently recruit. Unlike Red and Blue, he does not seem to have aged.

Trivia

  • Wally is the first rival:
  • Wally and the player's counterpart (either Brendan or May) are the first rivals:
    • To appear as multiple rivals in the same game.
    • Not to be named by the player.
  • Wally is the only rival whose first Pokémon evolves into different branched evolutions depending on the games.
  • His illness is never explained, but his symptoms appear to clear up in clean air, suggesting that it is either acute bronchitis or asthma.
  • In Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, Wally challenges the player near the exit of Victory Road, whereas in Emerald, he is met after crossing the first bridge. Despite this, the rematches with him occur near the end of Victory Road, regardless of the game.
  • In the Generation III games, it is possible for the capture tutorial to end with Ralts fainting. This can only happen if Zigzagoon is generated with 11 Attack, and the wild Ralts has a Nature that lowers Defense, an IV of 3 or less in HP, and 9 or less in Defense. With all this, Zigzagoon can do a maximum of 10 damage with its first Tackle, and after Growl is used on it, 7 with its second. This makes for a total of 17 damage, just enough to knock out Ralts. However, the game continues on as if it had been caught. Accounting for the odds of suitable stats, two maximum damage rolls, no Tackle misses and no potential speed tie losses, the probability of Ralts being knocked out is about 1 in 200,322.
    • In the Generation III games, it is also possible for Wally to catch a Shiny Ralts in the tutorial. However, it will not stay Shiny in subsequent battles.

  • In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, after the player defeats MaxieOR or ArchieAS at Mt. Chimney, Wally is listed as a certified Trainer at all Hoenn Pokémon Gyms.
    • As the player visits Lavaridge Town after these events, all Gyms from that point onward (including the Petalburg Gym) list Wally's name first, while Wally's name appears after the player's name at the first three Gyms.
  • In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, when Wally is battled on Victory Road, he gets his own battle theme, unlike in the original games. This later becomes his encounter theme when he is rematched at the Battle Resort.
  • Wally shares his Italian name with Grant: they both go by the name of Lino.
  • Prior to Sun and Moon, Wally shared his Chinese name with Dawn.
  • Before the catching tutorial, Wally is given a Poké Ball by Norman, as he appears to not have any. In Generation III, this is true, but in Generation VI, Wally is shown to have 15 Poké Balls in his Bag during the tutorial.
