Vladimir

Vladimir the Attacker (Japanese: ジンベイ Jinbei), who is also known as Ralph, is a minor recurring character who appeared in the Pokémon anime. He resides in Lilycove City.

Vladimir

History

Vladimir debuted in Pokéblock, Stock and Berry, where he escorted Ash and Max to his impressive training course in a bid to teach Ash's Swellow how to master Aerial Ace. Using his Pidgeotto, Vladimir demonstrated the correct way to use the move. He set up a bunch of targets and told Ash that he had to try and get Swellow to hit them. Ash had Swellow try this multiple times, without much success. By Lessons in Lilycove, however, Swellow got the move down perfectly. Ash thanked Vladimir for his assistance and continued on with his friends towards Mossdeep City.

Character

Vladimir was a strong Pokémon Trainer in the past, though little is known about this. In his debut, Ash and Max bowed down to him out of respect. He quickly spotted the flaws in Swellow's technique and was able to assist Ash in perfecting the move's accuracy and timing.

Trivia

  • His English name comes from the posthumous moniker of Vlad III: Vlad the Impaler.
    • His Japanese name may derive from Yagyū Jūbei, a famous samurai, as Aerial Ace's Japanese name (つばめがえし Swallow Return) is based on a sword technique used by Sasaki Kojirō, another famous swordsman.
