Venomoth (Japanese: モルフォン Morphon) is a dual-type Bug/Poison Pokémon.

It evolves from Venonat starting at level 31.

Biology

Physiology

Venomoth has a light purple body. Its thorax is white with several black, zigzagging stripes running across the horizontal length. Venomoth has six short legs and its head has a three-point crest. Its two pairs of wings are covered in dust-like, purple scales that are capable of releasing a poisonous powder.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Venomoth normally attacks by blowing poisonous powder by flapping its wings. Like other Moth/Butterfly Pokémon, Venomoth is capable of learning Psychic-type attacks.

Behavior

It flutters its wings to scatter its dust-like scales. It is mentioned in the anime episode Hokey Poké Balls that they are attracted to flames.

Habitat

Venomoth live in dense forests with much undergrowth and little light. It is mostly found in Kanto and Johto, and will also show up in Sinnoh and Unova.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Its favorite prey are small insects that gather around streetlights, attracted by the light in the darkness.

In the following episode, Katie's Venomoth used Disable once again to prohibit Ash's Swellow from using Peck. It was eventually defeated by Swellow though.

Trivia

Ken Sugimori artwork of Venomoth from Pokémon Red and Green
  • Although Venomoth clearly flies, it is not part Flying-type nor does it have the Ability Levitate therefore making it susceptible to Ground-type moves. It shares this trait with Beedrill and Dustox. Coincidentally, all three of these are Bug/Poison dual-type Pokémon.
  • In early official art of Venomoth, it was shown having yellow spots on the back of its wings. This was removed when later official artwork was released.
  • Venomoth shares the same species name with Dustox. They are both known as Poison Moth Pokémon.

Origin

Venomoth's ability to poison its enemies and its typing suggests that it may have been based on a moth in the Arctiidae family. Its Japanese name may mean it may also have been influenced by the Morphinae subfamily of butterflies; its wings' design seems to be heavily influenced by Morphinads.

Name origin

Venomoth is likely a combination of venom and moth.

Morphon may refer to the butterfly genus, Morpho.
