Templates.

I've noticed you moved some of my learnset templates to mainspace (and by extension, created redlinks). However, they're unusable because the header isn't done yet (or moved, dunno if it's done, not too experienced on this matter)... any plans to tackle them in nearby future? Marked +-+-+ (talk) 15:45, 2 January 2014 (UTC)

It uses a separate header, Template:Learnlist/levelh/4. Werdnae (talk) 18:02, 2 January 2014 (UTC)
Oh. What about the other three Generations, then? Marked +-+-+ (talk) 09:58, 3 January 2014 (UTC) PS. Wait. It has only one level field, which is how it is currently used (so it becomes a mess when you add the IVj or IVs). Marked +-+-+ (talk) 10:04, 3 January 2014 (UTC)
I haven't had time to build the other generations yet. For different header names use parameters 5 and 6 for the headers. So for IVj the fifth parameter is DPPt and the sixth is HGSS. If the sixth parameter isn't called, the second column doesn't appear, which is used for when there aren't any changes. Werdnae (talk) 18:42, 3 January 2014 (UTC)
Okay. It links fifth Generation to wrong place (where there now is sixth Generation), though. Marked +-+-+ (talk) 10:34, 4 January 2014 (UTC)

Might need some help here.

So, it seems while I was messing around with testing an old idea of mine, the Pages where template include size is exceeded category seems to have made me its victim. Is there a way this can be fixed? I've tried getting rid of some transclusions, but it still happens. Schiffy (瀬藤健二) (Talk Contribs) 23:00,1/2/2014 (UTC)

Unfortunately, there isn't really a way to fix that. The type effectiveness template is rather large, and I've been meaning to work on that a little, but there's simply so many of them on that page of yours that it'll never fit under the limit. Your best bet would be to use subpages. Alternatively, you could try using {{typebattle}}. It appears to be smaller, but it can be hard to tell at a glance. It only has enough parameters for the pure types, so there may be one or two that it won't work for. Werdnae (talk) 18:42, 3 January 2014 (UTC)
I think I might just end up splitting it into subpages of the subpage. It's either that, your suggestions, or use subst:, which would jack up the page size. Thanks for your time, anyway. Schiffy (瀬藤健二) (Talk Contribs) 20:56,1/3/2014 (UTC)

Cipher Peons in Pokémon XD (Category:Pages where template include size is exceeded)

Is there a way to remove the category without having to delete anything from the page? — Reshi643 03:24, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

The only way to remove that category is to make the templates smaller. Kogoro has recently built some replacement party templates that should be much more efficient. They act as a header, with the Pokémon cells inside it, as opposed to calling them as subtemplates (which doubles the include size.) Instructions for the use of them can be found here. Werdnae (talk) 03:42, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
For Kapen's Seviper and Cipher Key Lair's Ursaring, the style="margin:auto" isn't working. Am I missing anything on it? — Reshi643 17:34, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
For five Pokémon parties, you don't use the pipe before the template, just the margin:auto. Additionally, the Gen III Pokémon templates weren't updated with their margin codes yet. I've edited the two templates, and fixed the two Peons. - Kogoro - Talk to me - 18:15, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for fixing the templates and the Peons. — Reshi643 18:25, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

NIWA interwiki links

Hi Werd, I noticed an error with the template {{wb}} used to link to WikiBound. It only links to "Wikibound.info/Parameter", rather than "Wikibound.info/wiki/Parameter". I don't know how to fix it so I was wondering if you could help me out, thanks!! --ZestyCactus 21:15, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

Likewise, {{wk}} should link to "wikirby.com", not "wikirby.us".--Den Zen 21:29, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
I've fixed both of those. Werdnae (talk) 21:34, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
Awesome, thank you :) --ZestyCactus 22:01, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

Question

This is probably going to be a dumb question, but why aren't I allowed to create a user page? I've made a few edits on articles relating to the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series, and I've looked at the Userspace policy, yet I don't see any criteria I haven't filled already. Is the user page privilege currently disabled or is it because I've only made edits to side games? Pikemon27 (talk) 04:34, 26 January 2014 (UTC)

There is both a time and edit limit before you are able to create a userpage, keep at it and it'll become available to you. Werdnae (talk) 04:40, 26 January 2014 (UTC)
Okay then. Thank you, and I will! Pikemon27 (talk) 17:15, 27 January 2014 (UTC)

Partnership

Hello~ I'm Darknesslover5000, and I'm here to bring up a small proposition. I was originally going to take this to Archaic, as he seems to be the head Honchcrow around here, but I saw he doesn't answer talk page messages and it was advised to take concerns to the Editor-in-Chief, which, as it appears, is you. I'm here to ask, what does it take for Bulbapedia to partner with a fanfiction wiki? It's generally accepted that this is one of the better Pokémon sites around, and my friend and I recently moved our fanfiction wiki, Pika-Fanon, to the Shout Wiki, which isn't as well known as Wikia in general. As such, we were wondering if we could, in some way, partner our wiki with Bulbapedia. We already strive to imitate this wiki in terms of appearance, and, from my previous experience here, there have been users with an interest in making their own characters and storylines. If you could please get back to me, it would be most appreciated! --Darknesslover5000 (talk) 21:08, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

I would say your best bet would be to contact Archaic and the head of the Writer's Workshop (The fanfiction section of our forums) by PM on the forums. I should also note that while we cannot stop you making things appear visually similar, you must not directly copy our pages, including templates. Your wiki is licensed as Public Domain (which I should note is strange for a fanfiction wiki - posting a fanfic there forfeits all ownership rights to it). Our wiki is licensed under the Creative commons by-nc-sa 2.5 license, which requires any sharing to be done with attribution (which is lacking) and under the same license (which it is not). As a result I must insist you remove all content taken from Bulbapedia. Werdnae (talk) 20:20, 31 January 2014 (UTC)

A template in limbo

Mr. Editor-in-chief of the Editorial Board, I have an issue I need solved. For the past 3 months, I've been hoping that Umeko would find time to approve my Japanese/English lyrics template for songs. She has responded to periodic PMs, but she has many things on her plate at present, and she has not so far had the time to give the template a good look.

I really don't want to wait on Umeko indefinitely. Three months is quite a long enough wait for me. If Umeko can't manage it, someone else should be able to make this decision. I'd like for you (or someone) to vet and (if it's deserving) approve the template in Umeko's stead. Tiddlywinks (talk) 03:24, 3 February 2014 (UTC)

I don't think that the tables on those pages are complex enough for a template to be worthwhile. You should be able to put all the code into the header and hardcode it without it becoming too long. Werdnae (talk) 21:43, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
I don't understand whether you're against a template (as your first sentence apparently indicates) or not. "You should be able to put all the code into the header": this header? Do you perhaps mean that I should combine the three templates into one?
In any case, if you don't think the template saves enough "length": templates are not just for shortening code. Templates provide an accessible and recognizable standard, and by the same token they facilitate any changes to that standard by ensuring that only one place needs to be changed: the changes will be reflected everywhere the template has been used. Pokémon Gen6 icon

Hi there. I noticed that you uploaded the Gen6 icon image for Pokémon Skrelp. I was wondering, where did you get the icon file? Did they all get dumped from the game? Is there a place where I can get clean versions of all the icons as they exist in Gen6? I'm writing a small web plugin that will allow people to efficiently include Pokémon icons in their web projects through the use of an optimized image sprite (which also includes shiny icons made by the community). I'd like to use the Gen6 versions as a base, seen as how they're different from the Gen5 icons. Anyway, sorry for laying this request on you, but if you could help me I'd greatly appreciate it. Dada (talk) 13:08, 10 March 2014 (UTC)

Sorry for the late reply. We were given the sprites by the head of PokéWiki, who captured them himself. If you wish to use them, you would have to ask him. Werdnae (talk) 07:14, 13 March 2014 (UTC)

Template parser help

Hi Werd. In the Tretta Infobox, there is a switch that defines what category an article will belong to based on a numeric parameter. Due to the number naming conventions, I now need seprate outcomes for "1" and "01". The switch will always output whichever is first since it doesn't take leading zeros into account. Is there a way around this? Thanks. - unsigned comment from Nuva-kal (talkcontribs)

I think I've fixed it. Not an especially ideal solution, but I've made it pad out the right hand side of the outcomes to (at least) two characters long, using "a" as the padding character. (i.e. 1 is now 1a while 01 remains 01). Hopefully that should prevent them being numerically identical, without creating future issues. If you do need to use 1a, etc. in there in future, you can just change the padding character (in both the padright and the relevant outcomes) to something else which doesn't interfere. Help in creating Template pages

Hello Werdnae, sorry to ask this of you, but might it possible for you help me in creating the page Template:Balltypeh and Template:Balltype? Since I am a new user, it is not possible for me to create a new template myself. I know this request should go somewhere else, but I do not know any of the users here on Buhbapedia so I do not know who is certified to create new articles. Currently I am working on this: http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/f195/super-training-pokemon-ball-type-page-project-167935/

I just need the template page to be created so I can I fill it in and use it for the Super Training page. Once again, sorry for the bother and pardon my sudden request. Since this was my first time creating a template, I learned it by using the rdex and ndex codes. This doesn't create a plagiarism issue does it? If I only use the other codes as reference and base for the new ones I will create. Thanks in advance! Samhiuy (talk) 12:12, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

We need templates to be tested and then approved by staff before they're put in the template namespace. Usually, this is done in the userspace (and not included in the daily limit), but as a new user that won't work for you. So i've made them as subpages of the bulbapedia sandbox, so that you should be able to edit them. Bulbapedia:Sandbox/Balltype/h and Bulbapedia:Sandbox/Balltype. If you want to test them, use the talk page of one of them and call it as you would a normal template, but using the full page name.
It's definitely okay to make new templates based on the code of old ones. Let me know if you have any other issues. Werdnae (talk) 22:55, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
Thank you for the help~! Is there a need for it to be completely perfected? I have done the testing and create an example of how it will be used in the Bulbapedia talk:Sandbox/Balltype, but the code for the template isn't final. Since I do not have the needed sprites yet, there might be a change in the coding in the future. I am worried that I might not be able to edit/change the template code later on if it approved. For now it should work and could be used in Super Training (with the exception of the Elesa sprites that are acting as a placeholder). Samhiuy (talk) 04:33, 6 August 2014 (UTC)
Nice work. I made a couple of tweaks to make it easier to read or easier on the server to load, but they're pretty minor changes. I put a second row on the test page, using black colour dark for the header. If you're happy with how that looks, you'd be able to have just one parameter on the header, which will make it easier to put into use. Aside from that and the placeholder, the code looks good to me, but I'd suggest getting input from a more active staff member before actually putting it into use. Once it is in use, it probably will need to be protected, but I'm sure we can arrange for it to be left open for a while so you can touch it up before the protection is put in place. Template Help?

I attempted to create Sdex based on what is already at Rdex (originally I used Adex but canceled that) and attempted to add "Ability" to the end of it. Unfortunately, a lot of things aren't clicking, proving that I know - well - very little about how to edit these things. A brief list:

  • The "RGal" value (I will be changing the header, that's minor and on the page itself) does not populate. I get the # sign, but the number is not going in.
  • "Type" is just a bunch of Wiki code.
    • Later found, putting Unknown ability seems to cause the Type to become Unknown and colour as such.
  • "Ability" is not populating, instead appearing in the Wiki code from the "Type" column.
  • "NDex", Pokémon images (Shuffle images need to be added, but that's later on), and the Pokémon name are working correctly.

Can you help piece together what I am doing wrong so I can work on my Shuffle Pokédex list? CycloneGU (talk) 19:04, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

Never mind, looks like Abcboy got to it first. Thanks anyway! I still have things to learn regarding template editing, clearly. CycloneGU (talk) 21:28, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

Template:Sidegame

I'd just like to inform you that there are several requests for changes to Template:Sidegame on its talk page, as you're the last user to edit that template (back in 2012) and no-one's responded to anything on that talk page for a very long time. PartHunter (talk) 22:56, 30 March 2015 (UTC)

Image issue

There's a MediaWiki problem that strangely appears on Bulbapedia and nowhere else where Wiki markup is used (I think, at least not on Super Mario Wiki) — it distorts images and makes them look the way they last appeared before being reuploaded. If you don't understand, look at the uploading history of [[File:Amelia.png|Amelia.png]] and tell me what you think. ?????? 02:03, 1 May 2015 (UTC)

Bulbapedia, and Bulbanews, use a content delivery network (CDN) to provide images from the Bulbagarden Archives. This results in images being cached by the CDN, so they don't update immediately after they've been changed on the Archives. The image will eventually update on its own, just be patient. - Kogoro - Talk to me - 03:08, 1 May 2015 (UTC)

Questions about some user groups

Hello why does the Widget editor, Technical Staff and Steward usergroups exist? They don't seem to be doing any good since the rights in Widget editor is also included in Senior Administrators and above and we don't have any stewards. --Raltseye 20:54, 10 February 2016 (UTC)

These usergroups are there for either technical reasons (our multi-wiki setup means we have a few unusual things that are required) or as a leftover from previous staff structures/permissions (for example, Widgets were implemented after our current staff ranking system was in place, and so widget editing capability was granted only to people who needed it. It was subsequently granted to senior staff once we'd done some testing and figured out how tightly we needed to restrict access.) Werdnae (talk) 02:24, 13 February 2016 (UTC)

Wondercard/5 layout

Hi, I'm leaving you this message because you are one of the most recent contributors to the template {{Wondercard/5}}.

I have identified performance issues with this template, such as unnecessary rendering of hidden tables, and layout engine crashes on some browsers. I have proposed an alternate method to achieve the same visual layout with more lightweight markup at Project:Sandbox#Wonder Card Gen 5 mockup. It has been suggested at Template talk:Wondercard/5, however, that all layout elements on this wiki must be HTML <table>s, and never HTML <div>s, <blockquote>s, <p>s, or any other element. As you are familiar with this template, I'd like your input on the matter, especially on whether you find the nested layout tables more helpful for editing than a lightweight equivalent. ライケン Rigel Kent (talk) 01:35, 18 June 2016 (UTC)

DPPt dataminers

By any chance, do you know who does most of the datamining for Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum for Bulbapedia? sumwun (talk) 00:05, 20 July 2017 (UTC)

Hey there! Long time

Hi! Hope you are doing well. I'm just messaging to mention that we've started a new Retired Staff usergroup, and you're in it! It's our new way of keeping track and giving thanks to anyone and everyone who has been a part of the Bulbapedia team. There are a number of user rights associated with it that can be discovered here. If you ever find yourself editing again, you are welcome to one of the active usergroups as needed. Thanks for everything you have done! MaverickNate 13:49, 5 July 2023 (UTC)
