::::::Basically, when you place a template, you put a pipe (|) in to edit parts of it, right? (For example, {{Template|User Pet}} has two variables, and you use pipes to separate them) However, in cases like <nowiki>[[{{{1}}}]]</nowiki> and you want to make it alternate text, or when you want to put a break in the table, a pipe will just make it switch to the next variable. Using the {{Template|!}} template will add a pipe in, but it won't switch to the next variable.
