:Let me explain the reasoning behind this, because Funktastic did not. While it is true that individuals of single-gendered species are always ''she'' or ''he'', the species itself is still ''it'' because it is not an individual, but an abstract concept of a group. Therefore, unless a sentence is specifically referring to one individual, ''it'' is the pronoun we need to use. Think of it this way: a man is ''he'' and a woman is ''she'', but mankind is ''it''.
