I honestly don't think the sphinx connection was too big of a stretch. If Dunsparce can be a visual pun on bee snake, what's wrong with a visual pun on sphinx caterpillar? Sphinx caterpillars were named for their resemblance to the Egyptian Sphinx and I could definitely see Game Freak exaggerating these sphinx-like features (though toning them down in a more natural way). This seems better connected to the Tsuchinoko than the feathered serpent, at least. It ''might'' not be true, but I'm sure there are plenty of other Pokémon origins that Bulbapedia hasn't hit on the head. To me though, it seems far too coincidental not to be and I've already had several others to agree with my theory. | |||
