Dungeon tiles are game elements exclusive to Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team, its sequel, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity and Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon. In each dungeon, the floor is made up of square sections called "dungeon tiles." The square shape is typically not evident if a player is simply looking at the floor, but the tiles can be seen by performing certain actions.

Stairs

To further advance in a dungeon, a player must find the stairs. On the last floor of most dungeons, it will take the team out of the dungeon. The stairs can go up or down, depending on if the player is to descend to the dungeon's basement floor or ascend to the top of it.

Warp Point

Warp Points are found at the last floor of some optional dungeons. It instantly warps the team out of the dungeon.

Varying numbers of these can be found on a floor, if the dungeon contains them at all. If there is a yellow arrow above the player's or partner's head (indicating a stat problem such as lowered defense, accuracy, etc.), stepping on one of these will restore the normal state. However, it also cancels stat increments of the Pokémon.

Rescue Point

Rescue Points are found when atempting friend rescues and appear at the same spot as the fainted Pokémon that are being rescued.

Carpet

If the player finds a Kecleon Shop, items are placed on these. The player may either buy or steal the items; however, thieves are confronted by many high-level Kecleon.

Training Switch

Found in:
RB
TD
Sky
BSL
GtI
SMD

In certain dungeons, there is a chance that the team may encounter a Training Switch in a room. Stepping on a Training Switch gives the leader and their teammates the Trained status, which allows their moves to receive more points so their moves can be upgraded more easily.

Sparkling Floor

Sometimes, the player may find sparkling floor tiles in a room. Stepping on a sparkling floor will either make an enemy Pokémon appear, make the player pick up a Gold Bar or a rare item.

Traps

Traps are special dungeon tiles that cause negative effects. These tiles can make the team's Pokémon lose HP, PP, inflict status conditions, etc. These tiles will not affect enemy Pokémon unless spawned by a player's Trapper Orb. Issue #47 of Pokémon News claims that at least Pitfall Traps are appearing because of recent natural disasters.

In Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team, traps appear only after the player has completed the main story.

In Explorers of Time, Explorers of Darkness, Explorers of Sky, and WiiWare, some new traps have been introduced to reflect new moves in Generation IV, Toxic Spikes (created by using Toxic Spikes) and Stealth Rock (created by using Stealth Rock). Additionally, Explorers of Sky introduced two new, game-exclusive traps, which only appeared in a certain few dungeons in the game: the Grudge Trap and the Random Trap. Traps first appear in Amp Plains.

In Gates to Infinity, most of the same traps return from prior games; however, many traps in Gates to Infinity have been redesigned or renamed, and unlike the previous games, all of the traps break after being triggered. The first dungeon to have low-tier traps in them is Telluric Path, the high-tier traps start appearing in the dungeons that are unlocked after completing the main storyline.

In Super Mystery Dungeon, all the traps that appeared in Gates to Infinity return. All the traps' boarders have a slight change than they were in it's predecessor. And traps also appear more earlier in the game than it's predecessor and the low tier traps first appear in Glittering Mountain.

Emera-Crush Trap

Explosion Trap

Similar to the Selfdestruct Trap, this trap explodes when stepped on and does damage to Pokémon within a 2-tile radius. It will take away half of the player's and allies' current HP, and does 80 damage to wild Pokémon. It also destroys items and walls within the radius. If a Pokémon with the Ability Drizzle or Damp is present on the floor, or if the current weather is Rain, the trap will have no effect. Fire-type Pokémon will only take half damage.

Grimy Trap

Found in:
RB
TD
Sky
BSL
GtI
SMD

A random few Apples, Big Apples, Huge Apples, Gummis, or other edible food sources in the player's bag will be turned into Grimy Food. Grimy Food restores the player's Belly by 30, but inflicts a status condition. This trap has no effect on items in the bag when activated by allies.

Pokémon with a Survivalist IQ can sometimes bypass this side effect.

Grudge Trap

GrudgeTrap.png
Found in:
RB
TD
Sky
BSL

Warps all wild Pokémon around the Pokémon that triggered the trap and gives all wild Pokémon on the floor Grudge status. This usually results in all PP being drained away. This trap is exclusive to certain dungeons in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, such as Destiny Tower and Inferno Cave.

Gust Trap

Found in:
RB
TD
Sky
BSL
GtI
SMD

Sends the Pokémon that triggered the trap flying 10 squares in a random direction. If the Pokémon hits another Pokémon or a wall it will lose 5 HP (as will the other Pokémon in the former case), and if it lands on a tile that it cannot walk on, it will warp.

In Gates to Infinity and Super Mystery Dungeon, this trap breaks after being triggered.

Hunger Trap

Found in:
RB
TD
Sky
BSL

Reduces the Pokémon's belly by 10. If the Pokémon has less than 10 belly left, their belly will go down to 0. If the Pokémon that has 0 belly left is the leader, the leader will take 3 HP damage each turn. This trap breaks after being triggered, however in dungeons with high-tier traps in them, it can be triggered three times before breaking.

When an ally steps on it, the team member will be instantly removed from the dungeon. If a client as part of a mission steps on it, the mission fails and the team will return to base. Pitfall Traps will only appear in dungeons that have stairs going down.

Other

There are many other tiles present, which limits the access to only specific Pokémon.

  • Water tiles - Special areas of water, which only Water-type Pokémon, Pokémon who fly or levitate, and Pokémon with the IQ skills All-Terrain Hiker, Super Mobile, or Absolute Mover can walk through. Dive can only be used on these tiles and Dig cannot be used on these tiles.
  • Lava - Special areas of lava, which only Fire-type Pokémon, Pokémon who fly or levitate, and Pokémon with the IQ skills All-Terrain Hiker, Super Mobile, or Absolute Mover can walk through. However, a Pokémon that is not a Fire-type will be burned when walking through lava. Dig cannot be used on these tiles.
  • Walls - Walls surround dungeons; however, some Pokémon which seem to fly or levitate, such as Ghost-type Pokémon, can pass through on top of them. However, passing through walls makes the Belly drop five points per turn (this does not affect partners or enemies because they do not have Belly points until switched into a leader). Walls can also be passed through if the player uses a Mobile Orb, holds a Mobile Scarf, or has the IQ skills Super Mobile or Absolute Mover. In Gates to Infinity, the leader loses HP instead.
  • Air - Holes in the dungeon's floor that can only be crossed by Flying/Levitating Pokémon or those with the IQ skills All-Terrain Hiker, Super Mobile, or Absolute Mover. Dig cannot be used on these tiles.
