Primal Reversion (Japanese: メガシンカ Mega Evolution) is a temporary transformation that Kyogre and Groudon can undergo. It was introduced to Pokémon on February 18, 2023, as part of Pokémon GO Tour: Hoenn in Las Vegas. Like in the core series, Primal Reversion significant increases a Pokémon's stats, but its moves will remain the same. But rather than holding a Blue Orb or Red Orb, Primal Energy is consumed to activate Primal Reversion.

The mechanics of Primal Reversion in Pokémon GO is identical to that of Mega Evolution. The same type-based bonuses from Mega Evolution are activated while Primal Reversion is in effect:

Activation

Primal Reversion costs 400 Primal Energies the first time, and subsequent costs scaling down similar to Mega Energy costs for Mega Evolution. Primal Reversion lasts eight hours, and once the Primal Reversion timer expires, it will enter a rest period. During the rest period, the Pokémon can Mega Evolve again, but at a fraction of the Primal Energy cost required the first time. As the rest period counts down, the Primal Energy cost will linearly decrease. And once the rest period has ended, then the Pokémon can Mega Evolve at no cost.

A player can only have one active Mega Evolution or Primal Reversion at a time. Activating Mega Evolution or Primal Reversion on a second Pokémon will cancel any that is currently active, immediately starting its rest period timer.

Effects

Mega Evolution temporarily boosts the Attack and Defense base stats of a Pokémon, with some Mega Evolutions having different types. Mega-Evolved Pokémon can be used in all types of battles, except the GO Battle League in most cases.

When used in Raid Battles, a Mega-Evolved Pokémon provides special damage bonuses to all allies when on the battlefield:

  • ×1.3 damage for all moves that match any of the ally Mega-evolved Pokémon's type or
  • ×1.1 damage increase for all other ally Pokémon's moves

Multiple players can send out a Primal Reverion or Mega-Evolved Pokémon at one time, but the damage bonuses will not stack, and only the highest possible damage bonus will be applied.

If a player has an active Mega-Evolved Pokémon, then special bonuses are applied for catching Pokémon that share at least one of the Mega Evolution's type:

  • Bonus Candy from catching (also applied to any Pokémon caught from a raid)
  • Increased chance of Candy XL from catching (unlocked at High level)
    • This chance increase is a flat rate added to the success rate for each possible Candy XL.
  • Bonus XP from catching (unlocked at High level)

Like with Mega Evolution, once a Pokémon's Primal Reversion is registered to the Pokédex, walking it as a Buddy Pokémon will also yield its respective Primal Energies whenever it finds a Buddy Candy (at 5 Primal Energies per km, or 100 Primal Energies each time Candy is found). Primal Energies can be found this way regardless if Primal Reversion is active.

Primal Level

Primal Levels function identically to Mega Levels. As a Pokémon's Primal Level increases, the additional perks from its Primal Reversion improve. Each Pokémon can increase its progress towards the next Primal Level by activating Primal Reversion, up to once per day. Primal Levels are reset if a Pokémon is traded.

Primal Raids

Main article: Raid Battle

Primal Kyogre and Primal Kyogre are the Raid Bosses for Primal Raids. Upon completion, a Primal Raid rewards a large amount of Mega Energies that correspond to the Primal Raid Boss. Upon defeat, the Raid Boss will revert to its normal form and can be caught as such during the bonus challenge.
