Symbiotic relationships refer to any interaction between the members of two different species.

The recorded interactions are currently based on Pokedex entry data.

Mutualism

Is when both species equally benefit from the interaction, including:

  • Diglett and Dunsparce share their underground networks and happily co-exist
  • Shellder and Slowking gain equal benefit, Shellder gets food whilst Slowking acquires a higher intellect
  • Seadra aides Corsola by providing protection from predation, in return Corsola acts as refuge for Seadra
  • Remoraid aides Mantine in battle, though is typically found stuck to its underside where it feeds off of Mantine's scraps
  • Flygon aides Krookodile by whipping up a sandstorm to conceal it, the two share the captured prey
  • Karrablast and Shelmet's linked evolution leads to Accelgor becoming lighter and quicker from losing its shell to Escavalier whom enjoys the benefits of a defensive shell
  • The Flabebe line help flowers to grow, but also use them as their source of energy
  • Skrelp and its evolution Dragalge get along well with Dhelmise
  • Trevenant protects the forest against threats including logging


Commensalism

Refers to one species benefitting whilst the other gains neither benefit or harm, for example:

  • Corsola serves as a protective home to small water Pokémon including Horsea and Luvdisc
  • Blissey happily gift their eggs to Pokémon to calm them down
  • Lotad ferry Pokémon who cannot swim across bodies of water
  • Seedot get their nutrients from attaching themselves to trees
  • Torterra is also known as the "moving forest", its growing trees serves as a nest site for small Pokémon
  • Alomomola secrets a wound-healing mucus, it also ferries injure Pokémon to shore
  • Joltik live on larger Pokémon and rely on the static energy generated for energy
  • Druddigon uses the tunnels of burrowing Pokémon like Onix and the Diglett line to hide and hunt for prey
  • Grubbin inhabit areas surrounded by electric type Pokémon to act as defense against its main predator, bird Pokémon

Autotrophs

Refers to a species that obtains their energy through means outside of the consumption of another organism such as photosynthesis.

Predation

Refers to one species being eaten by another, in which only the predator benefits.

Herbivory

Omnivorous

  • Flareon breathes fire to cook Berries or captured prey
  • Snorlax is capable of digesting any food including Muk's poison
  • Delibird is omnivorous, and enjoys bug Pokémon
  • Poochyena is said to be an omnivore
  • Emolga enjoys lightning roasted berries and bug Pokémon
  • Rufflet crushes berries and prey in its sharp claws
  • Yungoos and Wimpod are regarded as scavengers
  • Trumbeak are also omnivores, though it is unclear what they eat specifically

Carnivorous

Examples of predation include:

Arbok, Vileplume Bellsprout line, Scyther, Horsea line, Kabutops, Aerodactyl, Noctowl, Spinarak, Ariados, Chinchou line, Quagsire, Umbreon, Forretress,Gligar,Houndour line, Grovyle, Linoone,Mawile, Trapinch line, Cacnea line, Whiscash, Lileep line Clamperl line, Metagross,Starly line, Roserade Carnivine, Carracosta, Litleo line, Dragalge, Sylveon, Gourgeist, Shiinotic are all known predatory Pokémon, though it is unclear what they prey on.

Saprotrophs

A saprotroph is an organism that uses digestive enzymes on its prey before consuming it, examples include:

  • Cradily ensnared its prey with its tentacles before dissolving it for consumption
  • Malamar and Sliggoo release digestive enzymes on to their prey before swallowing them
  • Pyukumuku ejects its stomach from its mouth to grab and swallow its unknown prey whole

Species that get their nutrients from dead matter, including:

Parasitism

Refers to one species gains sole benefit at the direct and harmful expense of another. Examples include:

  • Shellder feeds off of Slowbro's tail and food scraps, its poison is known to have a hallucinogenic effect
  • Togedemaru steal Elekid's stored electricity supply
  • Morelull tap into tree roots to extract energy

Competition

Competition between species can result in both being negatively impacted due to scarce resources, such as:

Human-Pokémon interactions

  • Machop line, Gigalith, Excadrill, Timburr line are staples on construction sites
  • Goldeen swim up streams and waterfalls, marking the beginning of spring. And Seaking lay their eggs in autumn. Similarly, Deerling and Sawsbuck migration and fur colour was used to predict the season.
  • Chansey and Blissey are capable of laying eggs that are delicious and nutritious for humans and Pokémon.
  • Certain Grass-type Pokémon such as Grotle, Snover and Tropius are able to grow edible nuts, berries and other fruit on their bodies. While Pokémon always enjoy these, the same cannot always be said for humans. The food that Grotle produces, for example, tastes bad to humans.
  • Shuckle are well known for storing certain kinds of Berries in their shells, which slowly ferment into juice. The juice has special properties if consumed by humans and Pokémon, and, as demonstrated in the anime episode A Better Pill to Swallow, can be used to make love potion
  • The fungus of Paras and Parasect can be used to make potions and medicine.
  • Golem sheds its shell once per year, this shell becomes nutrient rich soil ideal for farming
  • Mareep's fleece is processed into clothing
  • Miltank produce Moomoo Milk which can be bought in the games and used as a healing item. It is stated in both the games and the anime to be both nutritious and delicious. It is also stated in the games that it is said kids who drink it will become hearty, healthy adults. In the anime, groups of Miltank are often kept to produce the milk not only for drinking, but also for the milk used to make dairy products as part of a business. In A Race for Home!, it has been shown that milk made by Skiddo are also used to make dairy products such as cheese and soft-serve ice cream
  • Corsola horns are used by craftsmen to make sculptures and ornaments
  • Sharpedo's dorsal fin and Basculin, Wishiwashi are considered tasty dishes
  • Tropius grow fruit under its neck, the fruit is enjoyed by people and Pokémon alike
  • Combee and Vespiquen gather nectar from flowers to produce Honey which is savored by various species of Pokémon, such as Mothim who steal it
  • Rampardos' hardened steel skull was used as a helmet by ancient people
  • Magmortar's flames were used for metal processing in factories
  • Petilil and Phantump leaves make a medicinal teas
  • Cottonee's cotton is used for the stuffing of pillows and beds
  • One of Boldore’s orange crystal fragments would provide enough fuel for a hundred dump trucks.
  • Darumaka's dropping were used as heat packs for people in frigid areas
  • Cinccino's fur oil can be used to treat skin conditions
  • Alomomola is highly regarded by fisherman as its secreted mucus can heal open wounds
  • Sigilyph and the Golett line were associated with protecting ancient people from dangers
  • Clauncher, Clawitzer and Crabrawler claw meat are considered a delicacy
  • Toucannon are considered a symbol of good luck and are often brought to weddings
  • Ribombee pollen puffs are sometimes sold as nutrition
  • Mudsdale has been used for hauling large loads and its saliva plus mud was used to create the walls of old houses
  • Diluted Bounsweet sweat can be made into a fruit juice
  • Comfey flowers and scent are used in beauty and medicinal products
  • Hakamo-o's shed scales can be moulded and processed to make pots and pans
