Here's how my love of Pokemon began and grew...
When I was young, I got introduced to the anime (though at the time it was just "The Pokemon Show" to me) and I loved it. I started collecting the cards when I was about 7. By the time I was 16, I had three folders full of them, and I recently sold them to a young child along with some other old Pokemon merchandise. It was just my way of passing the torch to the next generation of Pokemon fans, *sniff* *wipes tear away* LOL. XD
My first Pokemon game was Yellow, I thought it was so cool (I loved that little Pikachu...) which I got when I was about 9, around the time the newer Crystal game came out.
Then I got Silver, which I bought from Cash Converters (an Australian second hand goods store) but it broke...The internal battery wore down and then ... boom, no more Silver. This happened BEFORE I had the chance to find out you could go to the Kanto region.
Then...a revolution...WOOHOO! I got Sapphire around Christmas 2003 which truly renewed Pokemon for me! My brother got Ruby. And LeafGreen brought back old memories of Generation I and all, but I thought it was one of the least interesting games in the Pokemon franchise so far. It just didn't grab me. My brother liked FireRed much better than LeafGreen because as far as he was concerned, "all the new Pokemon suck."
:-P I didn't think they were that bad. I LOVED my Kyogre from Sapphire. I bought Emerald because I loved the changes and I wanted to see the Battle Frontier. Wow, everything was so...new! The grass was slightly different! The Pokemon in the wild moved! A new character who wore sunnies and interupted you when you beat a Gym Leader! And...uh...well, it was good enough for me then.
Then...as I entered year 10 of high school and I worried if I was too old for Pokemon, BAM!; POKEMON DIAMOND AND PEARL!! I was like "OMG, I WANTS IT..." While I had for the first time EVA completed the Regional Dex in Emerald, Diamond was the first game where I completed the NATIONAL DEX. That was so cool (and got me bragging rights with my friends who were also fans of the series.)
For my 18th Birthday, one of my gifts will be HeartGold! Looking forward to Gen 5's suprises!
