The Ultra Ruin first appeared in [[SM100]], where {{Ash}} and {{AP|Pikachu}} were teleported there through a rift in space caused by a {{Shiny}} {{p|Tapu Koko}} from the alternate dimension and the {{DL|Recurring wild Pokémon in the anime|Tapu Koko}} from Ash's world both using {{type|Electric}} attacks at the same time. Shortly after arriving, Ash and Pikachu enountered a {{p|Guzzlord}}, and were forced to run from it, being narrowly saved by a {{pkmn|Trainer}} named {{al|Dia}} and his partner, {{p|Zeraora}}. Dia later explained that Guzzlord had one day appeared in this world, and, with no one having been able to stop it, everyone had been forced to evacuate as the gluttonous Ultra Beast continued devastating the landscape. Later Dia led Ash to what he recognized as the ruins of the [[Pokémon School]].

Unlike the game version, non-Ultra Beast Pokemon are known to exist, and still exist, in this world.
