::Um, according to the anime, in the giant pokemon island episode, Meowth mentions that his trainer is never around, and that he still does bad things. Also, from how he reacts to Giovanni's Persian, I've always assumed that Giovanni is Meowth's trainer, but has pretty much been abandoned/allowed to roam free after a fall from grace. - Cygnata
