EDIT: So I looked into it a bit more and らん (pronounced ran) in hiragana means "orchid". However in katakana, which is what Nidoran seems to be written in, ラン (still pronounced ran) means "run" (according to google). This makes more sense to me as Nidoran looks similar to a rhino, maybe "run" is in reference to the way rhinos charge when threatened....? Having convinced myself that I'm right, I am going to edit the page, I hope it made sense.
