:Hi, I agree that nido comes from the Japanese meaning 'two times' or something to that effect, but I disagree with the ran meaning orchid, I mean it does literally mean orchid but I think that this is unlikely to be where the ran in Nidoran came from. I think it's just a corruption of the English "run" or "rhino", especially as it's written in katakana.
