I think Genesect may be an homage to Neon Genesis Evangelion. The colour of him and his shiny sprite look very similar to the Unit-01 and Unit-02 respectively. Even down to the secondary colours used on the eyes. The stripe on the abdomen looks like the stripe on the Evas midsections. The origin story of Genesect is also very similar. The Eva units were created from a humanoid alien and modified to be piloted. The eva units are actually biological creatures with armour and a cockpit attached. Genesect's head looks similar to the mass produced eva units long heads. (Not pictured.) The choice of colours seems pretty deliberate. | |||
