For the game to recognize a Pokémon  as an event Pokémon and open areas that weren't there before (Shinto Ruins, Regis' caves) and get a special Pokémon (One of the Pokémon from the dragon trio, Regigigas), what does it need to have? Caught in a cherish ball, have a certain ribbon, fateful encounter, etc.?

:It's the Classic Ribbon and the coding that identifies what Pokémon it's on. You can hack a Cherish Ball and it won't do anything. Fateful Encounter won't either, because it's only the location data. The Classic Ribbon also keeps people from trading the Pokémon holding it over the GTS, since it's only on Event Pokémon, unless somebody hacks it.
