Possible original: the Taowu

One of the Four Perils of Chinese myth, the Taowu appears to be the inspiration for Chien-Pao. It too is traditionally depicted as a feline creature (a tiger, in Taowu's case) with large fangs or tusks. Additionally, the fact that it's one of the Four Perils lines up with the fact that it's one of four Treasures of Ruin, especially given that all the other three also each correlate with one of the perils.
