Tile Page

Could this possibly be moved into a page a general Tile page with Water, Cave, Grass, and other tiles?

I also think for Grass and such, we should include the changing of seasons since they do change. Thanks. —MasterKenobi 18:21, 18 March 2011 (UTC)

I think the tiles work better as separate pages. Things such as lava tile with no real functional purpose probably don't need to exist, but I feel that water tile, tall grass, sand tile and puddle at least deserve their own pages. Ledges and loamy soil are also separate things which certainly deserve their own pages, not part of one "tile" page. --SnorlaxMonster 13:58, 23 March 2011 (UTC)

Towers

The Generation IV games read the Sprout Tower, Burned Tower, and Bell Tower as caves so that wild Pokémon can be found there... should the floor tiles in those places be added? --Team Magma Zangoose 21:05, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

It even reads Ilex Forest as cave tiles (try using Secret Power, Camouflage or Nature Power, or battling with Burmy). I think they should all be listed. --SnorlaxMonster 07:40, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

Headache with RSE

From all my ventures through these Generation III games, I have noticed quite the variation of cave tiles within and between the games. Which ones exactly should we have of them in the gallery? VIET19です。 03:24, 3 May 2015 (UTC)

Merge discussion

Pale Prism suggested the merge and said elsewhere that there's "literally no reason" to have them separate.

Per the cave article, however, caves also contain water tiles, so I'm not sure. To be honest, my immediate thought was "Why do we have an article called cave (and also forest, desert,..), what's the point of it, wouldn't a category be enough?" "Tiles" (or "terrains") at least are a mechanic. Nescientist (talk) 13:55, 22 August 2021 (UTC)

The main reason that I said what I did is that the the current version of this article describes a type of location, not a specific type of "tile". The "encountering wild Pokémon" and "modifying certain moves' effects" aspects of cave tiles aren't inherently related to one another. There are some locations that aren't caves, such as the Kanto Power Plant or Celestial Tower, which have the exact same wild Pokémon encounter mechanics as caves, but have different effects on Secret Power, Nature Power and Camouflage. Conversely, I'm pretty sure that there are locations in the series that have the same effects on Secret Power, Nature Power and Camouflage as caves but don't have any wild Pokémon.
I don't really know why we have articles for different locations (like caves, forest, deserts and lakes). I guess they're just disambiguation pages with a little more pizazz? Pale Prism (talk) 23:00, 2 December 2021 (UTC)
I think merging with cave would make sense. This article presents the ground tiles of caves as if they were some kind of special tile that causes cave encounters. However, in most games caves instead are just a mixture of land and water tiles, with encounters occurring on all tiles in the cave (but land and water tiles have different encounters). In caves that have bridges (e.g. Sinnoh Victory Road), the bridges have the same encounters as so-called "cave tiles", despite not actually being cave tiles. --SnorlaxMonster 00:58, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
So, there may actually be a use in generic location articles like "cave"? (Or are you/we basically suggesting to rather have "environment"-type of articles instead, as relevant for those mechanics?)
(Right now, I don't oppose getting rid of this page, but I'm trying to figure out if I want to get rid of both of them altogether somehow. And maybe I don't..!? Anyway, thinking about it, it may actually be a separate discussion that'd require a separate suggestion/proposal at "Cave" at this point. Merge should be fine I guess.) Nescientist (talk) 12:09, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
I think a Cave page would be useful, especially if it covers both the location type and the environmental effects (especially for the purposes of the Dusk Ball). With regards to other pages like forest and desert, I can see your point as to why those might not be worth having content pages for, although that would be a discussion to be had on those pages themselves instead of here.
In terms of making pages for each distinct environment, I could see that, although I feel like there are several environment types that wouldn't merit pages (e.g. space), and environmental classifications don't always fit into nice boxes (e.g. in BDSP, Burmy's cloak does not align with Nature Power, particularly Underground and in Gyms). --SnorlaxMonster 12:32, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
I think merging with cave would make sense. This article presents the ground tiles of caves as if they were some kind of special tile that causes cave encounters. However, in most games caves instead are just a mixture of land and water tiles, with encounters occurring on all tiles in the cave. Right, yeah, so, this nails it, basically. This article essentially implies that "cave floor tiles" are entirely unique and notable "tiles" in their own right, when they really, really aren't. Pale Prism (talk) 01:12, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
Also, I would be in favour of environment-based articles if not for the fact that the specifics for each environment seem to change with every new release. The current way of doing things seems a bit more… stable. Perhaps the best solution would be to have two different types of article: "biomes" (far more subjective, based mainly on location names, what we have right now as disambiguation-with-pizazz articles), and "environments" (more objective, based on game mechanics, based on move/ability effects). I get that this may be a bit too much for this current discussion, but I'm just throwing out ideas. Pale Prism (talk) 01:34, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
I think it's off-topic from this discussion, but I think starting with a single environment page and splitting it as necessary would be a better approach. --SnorlaxMonster 09:18, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
Agreed. For now, I think that most of this page ought to be merged with cave. Pale Prism (talk) 00:21, 8 December 2021 (UTC)
