Steven Stone (Japanese: ツワブキ・ダイゴ Daigo Tsuwabuki) is a recurring character in the Pokémon anime. He is the Champion of the Hoenn region's Pokémon League.
In Pokémon Journeys: The Series, Steven is revealed to be one of the top eight Pokémon Trainers in the world within the World Coronation Series.

History
Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire
In Stairway to Devon, Steven was first mentioned by his father, who claimed he would be a good person for Ash and his friends to know.
In Which Wurmple's Which?, Nurse Joy informed Max that Steven was in nearby Granite Cave, so the group began their search for him.
He then debuted in A Hole Lotta Trouble. Unlike his game counterpart, Steven was not mentioned to be or have been the Hoenn League Champion, but was simply a powerful Trainer. Instead, Wallace was said to be the Champion later in Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl. Steven and his Aron were digging in Granite Cave, looking for rare stones. As Ash, his friends, and Team Rocket fell down a hole, Steven ended his excavation and quickly checked out what caused the crash to occur. Steven first found Max, Pikachu, and Meowth wandering around the cave.
Having been in Granite Cave for several months, Steven escorted Max and the others to a crack in the cave floor. Soon enough they spotted Ash and the others, who were being chased by a horde of agitated Aron. He ordered them to rush over to the nearby waterfall. At the meeting spot, Steven had his own Aron use Roar to calm the agitated horde. He then told the horde that the group were good people and ordered them back to their roosts. After both sides were reunited with each other, Steven found out that Team Rocket were the ones who caused the Aron to get angry. Steven handled Team Rocket on his own by having his Aggron blast them off with a Hyper Beam. Afterwards, Steven found a Fire Stone with the help of Aron. He decided to lead the group out of Granite Cave and took them to a deserted inlet, an ideal place for Ash to train for his rematch with Brawly. Having found a rare stone, Steven boarded his small boat to continue his search for other stones and wished the group luck for the future.
Pokémon the Series: XY
Mega Evolution Specials
Steven reappeared in Mega Evolution Special II, where he battled Alain using his Shiny Mega Metagross, but the battle was interrupted by Lysandre. Deciding to cooperate with Alain and company, Steven traveled to their destination, a small temple with two pillars in the center. When Alain and Steven held their Key Stones to the monument, a staircase of light appeared to lead them further within the ancient ruin. There, they discovered a similar mechanism that summoned a glowing Giant Rock from underneath the ruin. After Lysandre and his research team began analyzing the giant stone, a Rayquaza appeared from the sky, Mega Evolved into Mega Rayquaza, and started wreaking havoc on the surrounding area. Alain, Steven, and their Mega Pokémon partners tried to fend off the Legendary Pokémon, but were overwhelmed.
In this series, Steven was confirmed to be the current Champion of the Hoenn League, indicating that Wallace no longer holds the title. In Mega Evolution Special III, Steven brought Alain and Mairin to the Devon Corporation headquarters to analyze the situation of the missing Giant Rock. There, they received a conference call from Lysandre, who informed them that both Groudon and Kyogre have undergone Primal Reversion and were set to collide in the middle of the ocean. Steven recalled the Primal Reversion myth, and feared that the two Pokémon clashing again could have catastrophic consequences. As a result, he and Alain departed on a plane to check on the situation from the sky, with Mairin secretly stowing away with them.
In Mega Evolution Special IV, he, Mairin, and Chespie returned to Kalos. They contacted Professor Sycamore regarding Alain as he separated from them. Later, they arrived at Lysandre Labs with Lysandre and his secretary waiting for them. While Lysandre's secretary escorted Mairin to watch Alain battle ten Trainers, Steven and Lysandre discussed the Giant Rock. Lysandre showed Steven the Giant Rock in another room and explained that it is kept in a high-security tank to prevent energy from leaking out, as well as bringing up the fact that the super-ancient Pokémon fought in Hoenn previously. Steven was then seen watching the battle between Alain and Malva. After the battle, Steven arrived to where Chespie was lying on a bed, unconscious from absorbing too much energy from an experiment.
Main series
Steven reappeared in the main series in a flashback in Rivals: Today and Tomorrow!, where he met Sawyer. He also appeared in another flashback in Coming Apart at the Dreams!.
From The Right Hero for the Right Job! to Forming a More Perfect Union!, Steven joined the battle against Team Flare. He eventually battled alongside Ash, Alain, Diantha, and all of Kalos's Gym Leaders during the joint effort to stop the Giant Rock.
In The First Day of the Rest of Your Life!, Sawyer revealed that he received his Key Stone from Steven. Later, in Till We Compete Again!, Steven and Sawyer were shown at Lysandre Labs, studying the Giant Rock that was recently held there. He proceeded to give Sawyer some information, which Sawyer promptly wrote down in his notebook.
Pokémon Journeys: The Series
Steven appeared in a fantasy in Reuniting for the First Time!, when Ash mentioned him to Wallace.
In Aim For The Eight!, Steven was revealed to be in the Master Class of the World Coronation Series, being ranked third.
Steven appeared in a fantasy in Friends, Rivals, Lend Me Your Spirit!, when Goh mentioned him to Paul.
In Curtain Up! Fight the Fights!, Steven participated in the Masters Eight Tournament, along with the rest of the Masters Eight, reuniting with Ash, Alain, and Diantha, and meeting Iris and the other regional Champions. When it was revealed that Ash would be his first opponent, Steven revealed that he would finally have the chance to battle him. When asked by Lance if he knew Alain, Steven replied that he knew him through the Key Stones excavations and also revealed that he hoped Alain would not be overwhelmed by Leon in the very first match of the tournament.
After watching the other battles in the following episodes, Steven and Ash began their battle. In Battling as Hard as Stone!, Steven was able to hold his own against Ash, but was defeated by the Alola Champion, making him the fourth person to be eliminated from the tournament. Following his loss, Steven wished Ash good luck for the remainder of the competition and returned to Hoenn.
In A Flood of Torrential Gains!, Steven watched Ash's match against Leon.
Character
Similar to his game counterpart, Steven is reserved and interested in collecting stones. During Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire, he did care for the Aron in the Granite Cave and attempted to stop a herd of them from chasing Ash, his friends, and Team Rocket. He battled Team Rocket after discovering that they were the ones who made the Aron horde angry.
During Pokémon the Series: XY, he became more open to Trainers, such as Alain and Mairin. He is seen as a sort of mentor figure by Sawyer, whom Steven gave a Key Stone and Sceptilite. His usual calm, and a bit playful demeanor is constantly reflected throughout the series, such as during his battles against Alain and Mable; nevertheless, he can be serious when the situation demands. In a particular instance, he was not greatly disappointed or enraged after learning Lysandre's true intentions, displaying his happy-go-lucky personality.
Being the gentle and playful person that he is, he was not worried when he and his Metagross were outnumbered by Mable and Team Flare Grunts during their battle, also reflecting his strong bond and great confidence in his Pokémon. He tends to appreciate others for their efforts, and has a great sense of honor for fellow Champions, as displayed during his interactions with Diantha, Cynthia, and Leon.

| Aron was always seen outside its Poké Ball in its debut appearance, helping Steven during his search for stones in Granite Cave. After Team Rocket, along with Ash and his friends fell into one of the Rocket trio's pitfall traps, Aron and Steven began to search for the source of the crash. Later Aron Roared at the rampaging wild Aron, helping to settle them down. After the trio were sent blasting off, Aron pointed Steven to a Fire Stone in a nearby dirt pile. Aron and Steven said their farewells to the group as they headed off into the distance on a sailing boat.

In Battling as Hard as Stone!, Steven used Aggron as his second Pokémon in his Masters Eight Tournament match against Ash. It battled and defeated his Dracovish before being defeated by Gengar. Aggron's known moves are Hyper Beam, Heavy Slam, Smart Strike, and Rock Tomb. | ||

Steven, in a version based on the anime, appeared in Pokémon Mezastar.[4] In this game, Steven is seen using Cradily, a Shiny Metagross, Aerodactyl, and Aggron, with Aerodactyl being a Pokémon that he has not been seen using in the anime, although it could be a reference to him using Aerodactyl in the core series games. In the second Double Chain series set, Steven also appeared as an opponent in an event that recreated the Masters Eight Tournament that ran from October 27 to November 21, 2022. Upon beating the character, the player can receive a Support Pokémon Ticket based on Steven's Metagross, which can Mega Evolve.[5]

Trivia
- If the player has Steven's Shiny Beldum, Steven makes a reference to Alain, his Mega Charizard X, and the events of Mega Evolution Special II during the Delta Episode in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. This reference is also repeated by Steven during the Hearts United story event in Pokémon Masters EX.
- Steven is the only member of the final Masters Eight lineup in Pokémon Journeys: The Series to have not used a Flying- or Dragon-type Pokémon in the Master Class.
- Steven is also the only member not to own a Pokémon who shares an evolutionary line with one owned by Ash, nor own a Pokémon that Ash also owns.
