Spiritomb appeared in ''[[DP056|The Keystone Pops!]]''. When Buizel accidentally knocked down [[Hallowed Tower]], Spiritomb emerged from the tower's [[Odd Keystone|keystone]]. It then wreaked havoc on a nearby town.

A Spiritomb first appeared under the ownership of [[Cynthia]] in ''[[PS347|Ring Around the Roserade II]]'', and helped {{adv|Platinum}} train for her upcoming Gym challenge against [[Gardenia]]. With her psychic abilities, she was able to seal [[Tru]]'s {{m|Razor Leaf}} attack alongside [[Platinum's Empoleon|Prinplup]]'s water attack, and used them to save [[Rad Rickshaw]], inadvertently getting {{adv|Diamond}}, {{adv|Pearl}}, and Platinum a set of bicycles. Spiritomb was later used against [[Cyrus]], where she defeated his {{p|Honchkrow}}, but was then defeated by {{p|Weavile}}.

* Its {{game|Diamond and Pearl|s|Diamond}}, {{game|HeartGold and SoulSilver|s|HeartGold, and SoulSilver}} Pokédex entries states that it was formed from 108 spirits. Spiritomb's number in the [[List of Pokémon by Sinnoh Pokédex number|Sinnoh Pokédex]] is 108, its Defense and Special Defense base values are 108, and it weighs exactly 108.0 kg. In {{pkmn|Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire}} it can be found at [[Sea Mauville]], which lies on {{rt|108|hoenn}}. All this is based on the number of temptations a person must overcome to reach Nirvana in Buddhism.

* Prior to the introduction of the {{t|Fairy}} type in [[Generation VI]], Spiritomb was one of the only two {{OBP|Pokémon|species}} that had no weakness (without the aid of an Ability) along with {{p|Sableye}}.

Spiritomb is based on a Jibakurei, a spirit bound to a single place. It is also based on a {{wp|Buddhist}} tradition performed on {{wp|New Year's Eve}} in Japan. A bell is rung 108 times to chase away the 108 temptations in order to achieve Nirvana. The wisps of spirits surrounding its face also resemble a set of prayer beads, a possible reference to {{wp|Japa}}. It may also be based on a crystal ball.

Spiritomb may also be based on {{wp|Water Margin}}, one of China's {{wp|Four Great Classical Novels}}, which is also very well known in Japan. In the first chapter of the novel, a foolish army marshal orders the removal of a stone monument which had been guarded by monks for generations. Doing so releases the spirits of 108 demons sealed therein. These 108 souls, having atoned for their sins, become the {{wp|108 Stars of Destiny}}. They are reincarnated centuries later as 108 outlaws, the heroes of the novel.
