Spark (Japanese: スパーク Spark) is the leader of Team Instinct (Japanese: チームインスティンクト Team Instinct) in Pokémon GO. Team Instinct is researching Pokémon breeding, and is represented by Zapdos. Team Instinct Trainers believe a Pokémon's intuition is linked to how they are hatched.

He is one of Professor Willow's assistants, along with Blanche and Candela. Standing at over 6 feet tall, Spark is the tallest of the three team leaders.[1] He has an impulsive personality and likes to tease Blanche, who tends to get flustered when proven wrong.[2]

History

Involving Team GO Rocket

On October 28, 2019, Spark had been collecting Eggs from PokéStops, fearing they would be turned into Shadow Pokémon if hatched by Team GO Rocket. During his mission, he encountered Team GO Rocket Leader Sierra for the first time, who mocked his efforts. Spark initially challenged her to battle but did not come prepared with any of his Pokémon.[3]

On November 7, 2019[4], Spark sent the following message in response to Team GO Rocket Leader Sierra:

"Your threats won’t stop me from doing what’s right, Sierra! You might think I’m naïve, but I’m positive that the good guys always win in the end...and that’s the side I’m on!"'

On November 12, 2019, Spark successfully tracked down Sierra's location using the Rocket Radar and challenged her to battle. The battle resulted in a close victory for Spark, who ended up with only one Pokémon remaining.[5]

On July 26, 2020, during Pokémon GO Fest 2020, Sierra battled Spark. Spark initiated the battle by sending out an Elekid, while Sierra sent a Shadow Houndoom.[6] Houndoom started the fight by using Bite but Elekid knocked it with a destabilizing Thunder Punch.[7] In the end, Spark won the battle when Giovanni recalled Sierra to him along with the other Team GO Rocket Leaders. Professor Willow, Blanche, Candela, Spark and their Pokémon then witnessed the Pokémon GO Fest 2020 fireworks show in the sky.[8]
