Smokescreen (Japanese: えんまく Smokescreen), formatted as SmokeScreen prior to Pokémon X and Y, is a non-damaging Normal-type move introduced in Generation I.

Effect

Smokescreen lowers the target's accuracy stat by one stage.

Generations I to II

In the Generation I and II core series games, when an in-game opponent outside of the Battle Tower uses Smokescreen, the move has a 25% chance to fail.

Generation III onwards

Smokescreen can be used as the second move of a Pokémon Contest combination, with the user gaining 3 bonus appeal points if Smog was used in the previous turn.

If powered up by a Normalium Z into Z-Smokescreen, the user's evasiveness is raised by one stage.

In the Rescue Team, Explorers and Adventure Sqaud series, Smokescreen inflicts the Whiffer status condition on the enemy. Under the Whiffer status, the opposing Pokémon will always miss with any attack; even moves like Aerial Ace will miss, although the regular attack will still hit if the user has the Sure-Hit Attacker IQ skill. This move is affected by Magic Coat.

From Gates to Infinity onward, Smokescreen instead decreases the target's accuracy by one stage.

Pokémon UNITE

In Pokémon UNITE, Smokescreen is Greninja's second move. It is obtained by evolving into Frogadier at level 5 and upgrading Substitute into it instead of Double Team. The user becomes invisible, leaving behind a cloud of smoke while dashing and gaining bonus movement speed. The user's next attack is boosted and additionally deals bonus damage. The user is unstoppable while dashing. At level 13, this also increases the user's Attack by 20% for a short while after using.

Description
