Shiftry's evolutionary line can be seen as a counterpart to Ludicolo's family. Both of them are part Grass-type, they first evolve at level 14, a respective evolutionary stone is used to reach the final stage, both of them are version-exclusive between Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, and are based on legendary japanese creatures or yokai: Shiftry's family is based on the tengu and Ludicolo's is based on the kappa. Shiftry and Ludicolo both have fur or hair covering portions of their bodies.
Origin
Shiftry are based on tengu, who are known for their proverbial pride, cruel tricks, ability to read minds, and for wielding magical leaf fans called 羽団扇 hauchiwa, known to have the power to stir great winds. They tipically live in mountain forests and are highly territorial, and they are mainly divided in the lesser crow-like konoha-tengu (木葉天狗, "foliage tengu") and the more intelligent and humanoid daitengu (大天狗, "great tengu"), with long noses and flowing white hair. All of them wear single-toothed wooden clogs called tengu-geta, of which Shiftry's feet mimic the shape.
Name origin
Shiftry may be a combination of shifty (deceitful) and tree.
Dirteng may be a combination of dark or dirty and 天狗 tengu.
