A shard is a type of item. In the Generation III games, shards can be traded individually for evolutionary stones. In the Generation IV games, they can be traded in groups of 10 for a TM.

In the Underground's mining game, they appear to be broken pieces of plates. Specifically, the Red Shard appears to be from a Flame Plate, the Yellow Shard appears to be from a Zap Plate, the Green Shard appears to be from a Meadow Plate, and the Blue Shard appears to be from a Splash Plate.
