When the player first rides the ship to Vermilion City, a man will bump into them as they board and explain he's lost his granddaughter. Once the player enters the lower deck, a crewman will deny them access and ask them to locate a co-worker who is slacking off on the floor above. The crewman is a Sailor in a previously empty room, and once beaten the crewman below will let the player pass. After traversing through the lower deck, the player finds the man's granddaughter. The player takes her back to her grandfather, at which point the ferry arrives in Vermilion and the player can depart.

After the initial trip to Kanto (which can happen on any day of the week), the S.S. Aqua can be sailed from Kanto to Johto every Sunday and Wednesday, and sails from Johto to Kanto each Monday and Friday. Trainers can be encountered on the ship each voyage, and may be battled. If the player returns to the city they boarded the ferry from and boards it again, they can battle a new set of trainers. Any of the trainers encountered on the ship cannot be battled ever again, however.

After the maiden voyag thought, you do not have to battle any trainers as the ship arrives once you've been to seep in the bed in your room
