Ryuki (Japanese: リュウキ Ryūki) is a non-player character in the Generation VII games. He is a rock guitarist and a Pokémon Trainer who specializes in Dragon-type Pokémon.

In the games

Ryuki is a rock musician who has traveled to Alola from another region beyond the sea in order to spread his fame. He's also one of the Trainers who challenges the player for the title of Pokémon Champion.

In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Ryuki also sometimes appears at the Kantonian Gym in Malie City, where he can be battled, although defeating him isn't necessary in clearing the Kantonian Gym challenge. After being defeated for the first time, he gives the player a Dragon Scale. He also promises to become a Dragon-type Gym Leader once real Gyms start appearing in Alola.

Pokémon

Ryuki's Pokémon are kept in Ultra Balls.

Quotes

Kantonian GymUSUM
"The name's Ryuki. I'm what you might call a star. I mean, with partners like my Pokémon, how could I not be a star? I came all the way across the sea here to Alola to challenge the Pokémon Gym!"
"But this Kantonian Gym here... This isn't a real Pokémon Gym. Still, I dig it here. It's got a feel to it, man. It's got spirit."
"Hey, Trainer. I can feel your spirit, too! Want to have a battle with Ryuki?/Hey, Champ! Why not have a battle with me? Let our fiery spirits clash in a blaze of glory!"
Sure!: "Allow me to introduce my band mates! Come on, babies!"
No thanks!: "I don't blame you. I'm a rocker down to my core, after all!"
  • Upon being defeated
"I'm gonna belt out everything inside of me! I've gotta encourage my Pokémon to keep rocking!"
  • After being defeated
"All right! My babies were all fired up to play a set, but you chilled them out nicely!"
First challenge: "That's right, a Dragon Scale! I've poured my spirit into it, too!" "Hey! You're curious about what kind of item the Dragon Scale is, aren't you? Well, you'll have to figure that out for yourself!"
"Once Alola gets a real Pokémon Gym, I give you my word I'll become the Dragon-type Leader!"
  • If talked to again (subsequent challenges)
"The name's Ryuki. I'm what you might call a star. And now, you're a star, too! There's only one thing two stars can do—get the crowd fired up with a blazing, rocking Pokémon battle!"

  • Upon being defeated
"I'm gonna belt out everything inside of me! I've gotta encourage my Pokémon to keep rocking!"
  • After being defeated
"Everyone's got their own problems, huh? The critics loved my songs, but nobody was buying my music for a while, man. But I'm just a rocker down to my bones. Nothing else to do but keep on rocking. I dig you, Champ. Looks like you know who you are, too, right down to your bones."
Subsequent challenges

Ryuki in the anime

Ryuki appeared in Aiming for the Top Floor! as the leader of the Kantonian Gym. He first had a battle with Kiawe, easily defeating his Marowak when it got distracted by Ryuki's music. Next, he battled Ash, but when Rowlet was losing to Ryuki's Zweilous, Meltan became infuriated and ate some of the decorations on Ryuki's suit in retaliation. Ryuki then changed the match into a Double Battle, with Ash using Rowlet and Meltan against Ryuki's Druddigon and Zweilous. Thanks to Rowlet learning Brave Bird, Ash was able to win the match. Ryuki then gave him a Badge bearing a picture of his own face as a proof of his victory.

Character

Ryuki considers himself a star, and his stage persona tends to take over the battlefield. He tends to shout into his microphone to ensure that he gets his way. He insists on being called "Leader", as he feels anything less disregards his individuality and undermines his authority.

Ryuki in Pokémon Adventures

In the Pokémon Adventures manga

Ryuki debuted in the Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon arc. He considers himself a battling superstar, so he traveled to Alola in hopes of fighting the powerful Ultra Beasts. He was hired by Faba, who agreed to help Ryuki in exchange for his services. Ryuki was sent to Mount Lanakila, where he found Moon lying unconscious in the snow after she returned to Alola via an Ultra Wormhole. He picked the girl up and took her to Aether Paradise, where Faba had her locked in a cell.

Moon was later freed by Gladion, who teamed up with her to stop Faba. Cornered, Faba tricked Ryuki into helping him by revealing Gladion's Silvally was created to defeat the Ultra Beasts. This subsequently prompted Ryuki to battle Gladion and Moon in order to defend his place in the spotlight. After losing his first Pokémon, Ryuki followed up by sending out two more, only for Gladion to stop him and call off the battle. Gladion revealed Faba was using Ryuki as a distraction so that he could flee Aether Paradise and escape. After learning that others were fighting the Ultra Beasts elsewhere in Alola, Ryuki ran off to join them.

Months later, Gladion and Dulse set off to rescue Faba, who had been dragged into Ultra Space by several Nihilego. Ryuki chose to tag along with them, much to Gladion's annoyance.
