Roselia (Japanese: ロゼリア Roselia) is a dual-type Grass/Poison Pokémon.

It evolves from Budew when leveled up with high happiness during the day, and evolves into Roserade when exposed to a Shiny Stone.

Biology

Physiology

Roselia is a small Pokémon with a light green body. Roselia has a leaf skirt and holds a rose on each of its hands, a red one in its right and a blue one in its left. Roselia has leaves extending from its shoulders like epaulettes, and a pointed streak of yellow extends from its neck down the forefront of its leaf skirt. Visible from the back is a small stretch of yellow coloration around its neck much like a collar. Roselia also has three thorns on top of its head.

Gender differences

A male Roselia has a shorter skirt than a female.

Special abilities

Roselia normally fire sharp thorns (either Poison Sting, Toxic Spikes or Pin Missile, but the latter of the three rarely occurs) as a first offense, usually at wild Pokémon who try to steal its flowers. Roselia are also capable of launching some Powder-based moves to either inflict status problems on its foes (Sleep Powder, Stun Spore, or Sweet Scent) or to heal the status problems of itself and its allies (Aromatherapy). Roselia are also capable of knowing Petal Dance. Like most Grass-type Pokémon, Roselia can take in sunlight and focus it into a SolarBeam.

Behavior

Roselia seem to be peaceful Pokémon, but can attack fiercely with powerful poisonous attacks upon sensing danger.

Habitat

Roselia are found in many habitats, most commonly in forests and grasslands.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Roselia usually drink nutrient-rich spring water. Since Roselia is a plant-based Pokémon, it also nourishes itself through photosynthesis.

In the anime

File:DrewRoselia.png
Roselia in the anime

Roselia is the signature Pokémon of Drew. Roserade was first seen under his ownership in Now That's Flower Power and has been used in many Pokémon Contests since. It evolved at some point between The Unbeatable Lightness of Seeing and A Full Course Tag Battle! while Drew was in Johto.

Victoria of the Winstrate family owns a Roselia which she used in a battle against May in Candid Camerupt.

At the end of Dawn of a New Era, Ash challenged Nando to a Pokémon battle. Nando's Budew evolved into a Roselia while battling Ash's Pikachu, but Pikachu still won.

A Roselia made a cameo appearance in Arriving in Style! as an entry in the Hearthome Collection contest.

Trivia

  • Roselia is the first (and so far, the only) Pokémon to receive both a pre-evolution and an evolution in the same generation. Other Pokémon that received both, though not in the same generation, are Chansey, Electabuzz and Magmar. Roselia is the only one of those Pokémon that isn't from Generation I.
  • In 2007, employees of Nintendo of America put Heracross up on the Global Trade Station for a Japanese Roselia.
  • Roselia is one of fourteen Pokémon that one can collect foreign Pokédex entries for in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.
  • Roselia was at one time the only dual-type Grass/Poison Pokémon that did not evolve into or from anything (though this changed when Budew and Roserade were introduced). It was also the only Pokémon with its specific type combination to not be from Generation I until its evolution and pre-evolution appeared.

Origin

Roselia are based on rose bushes

Name origin

Roselia's name is based on rose and perhaps azalea, or more likely buddleia.
