In the games
In the games
Ribbons were introduced in Generation III, where they primarily serve as rewards for competing in Pokémon Contests, though certain Ribbons are obtainable by defeating the Elite Four or from special events, among others. They are viewable from the PokéNav in Ruby. While in FireRed and LeafGreen they aren't visible, their data is still kept, and the correct Ribbons appear on a Pokémon if transfered to the Hoenn games or those from the following generations.
Ribbons were first introduced in Generation III. In Generation III, the large majority were obtained by competing in and winning Pokémon Contests, but in later generations, a larger variety of Ribbons have been added. Besides competing in Contests, some Ribbons are awarded for conquering special battle facilities like the Battle Tower, others are obtainable from various NPCs in-game, and some are only distributed on event Pokémon. In Generation III, Ribbons also had no names, they only had unique icons and descriptions.

In Generation IV and V, more Ribbons were introduced, where they are viewable in the Pokémon's summary screen. While primarily obtained in Super Contests, Ribbons could still be obtained in a variety of ways.
In the Generation V games, there are no ways to earn any Ribbons in-game, but Pokémon distributed through events could have Ribbons, and Pokémon transferred from a previous generation also retained their Ribbons.

In Generation V, Ribbons are kept, and though they aren't obtainable anywhere in-game, they can still be seen in the summary screen if obtained in Generation IV or from an event, which are the only ways allowed to obtain Ribbons. Black and White introduced a new Ribbons, which are only obtainable from events, as well as a categorization scheme, separating them as League, Contest, Tower, Memorial, and Gift Ribbons.
Prior to Generation VI, Ribbons were only added (and a few changed), and if a Pokémon had Ribbons and was transferred to a later generation, all of its Ribbons would be retained and could be viewed on its status screen. Generation VI, however, reduced the total number of Ribbons from 80 to 46 (48 counting different versions of the Contest/Battle Memory Ribbons) by consolidating the Contest and Tower Ribbons from previous generations. If a Pokémon with Contest or Tower Ribbons is transferred from Generation V to VI or VII through Poké Transporter, all of its Contest and Tower Ribbons are replaced by a Contest Memory Ribbon or a Battle Memory Ribbon.

Checking Ribbons
Since Generation IV, a Pokémon's Ribbons can be viewed on its summary screen, but in Generation III, Ribbons could only be viewed on the PokéNav in Ruby and could not be viewed at all in FireRed and LeafGreen (though the data would still be safely retained if a Pokémon had any Ribbons).
League Ribbons (Japanese:??? ???) are awarded to every Pokémon in the player's current party when he or she defeats the Elite Four in Generation III or in Diamond. There are two distinct League Ribbons, making this category have the least amount of Ribbons.

Contest Ribbons (Japanese:??? ???) are awarded to the winning Pokémon in any of Hoenn's Contests and Sinnoh's Super Contests. A different Ribbon is awarded for winning in each of the four ranks of the five different categories (Cool, Beauty, Cute, Smart, and Tough), making a total of 20 Ribbons in each type of Contest. As those awarded in Contests and Super Contests are considered separate, there are a total of 40 Contest-related Ribbons obtainable in the games, making this category have the most amount of Ribbons.

In Ruby and Sapphire, the Normal Rank Ribbons for all five Hoenn Contests can be obtained at the Verdanturf Town Contest Hall while the Super Rank Ribbons at Fallarbor Town. The Hyper Rank Ribbons are obtained in Slateport City, and the Master Rank Ribbons are at Lilycove City. In Emerald, all are obtained at Lilycove City.
Categories
The Generation V games introduced categories for the Ribbons, dividing them into League, Contest, Tower, Memorial, and Gift Ribbons.

In Diamond, all twnety Ribbons for the four ranks of Super Contest (Normal, Great, Ultra, and Master) are obtained at the Hearthome City Contest Hall.
League Ribbons
List of Ribbons in the games#League Ribbons
League Ribbons (Japanese: リーグリボン League Ribbons) are awarded to every Pokémon in the player's current party when they defeat the Elite Four and enter the Hall of Fame in most games. Different Ribbons are awarded for this in Generation III, in Diamond, in X and Y, in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, and in Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon. All of these Ribbons are retained if a Pokémon that has them is transferred to a later generation.

Contest Ribbons are the only type of Ribbons found in the games and featured in the anime.
Contest Ribbons
List of Ribbons in the games#Contest Ribbons
Contest Ribbons (Japanese: コンテストリボン Contest Ribbons) are awarded to the winning Pokémon in Pokémon Contests or Pokémon Super Contests. Different Ribbons are awarded for each of the five different Contest categories. In Generations III and IV, different Ribbons are also awarded for each of the four different ranks therein, but in Generation VI, a Ribbon is only earned after winning a Master Rank Contest. A Ribbon for winning all Master Rank Contests is also granted in Generation VI.

Tower Ribbons
Any Contest Ribbons obtained in Generation III are retained if a Pokémon that has them is transferred to Generation IV or Generation V, and any Contest Ribbons earned in Generation IV are retained into Generation V, but if a Pokémon with any Contest Ribbons is transferred from Generation V to Generation VI through Poké Transporter, the Ribbons will be consolidated into a Contest Memory Ribbon.
:See also: List of Tower Ribbons
Tower Ribbons (Japanese:??? ???) are awarded to Pokémon used to complete certain challenges in any of Hoenn's, Sinnoh's, or Johto's Battle Towers. There are a total of eight Tower Ribbons.

There are two Ribbons from the Battle Tower found in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald. They are awarded for clearing the Level 50 Battle Tower and the Level 100 Battle Tower in Ruby and Sapphire, or Open Level Battle Tower in Emerald. Ribbons are awarded to party Pokémon upon completion of the eighth consecutive Battle Tower challenge (defeating 56 trainers in a row) and each challenge thereafter if a Pokémon does not already have a Ribbon. Defeating fifty trainers in a row but losing before 56 does not award any Ribbons.
Contest Ribbons are the only type of Ribbons found in the games to be featured in the anime.

In Generation IV, two new Ribbons replace the two given out in Hoenn, though they serve the same purpose. Four additional Ribbons are given out after winning fifty times in the Double Battles, in Multi Battles against the CPU, in Multi Battles with someone, or reaching Rank 5 in the Wi-Fi mode.
Tower Ribbons
List of Ribbons in the games#Tower Ribbons
Tower Ribbons (Japanese: タワーリボン Tower Ribbons) are awarded to Pokémon that have been used to conquer various challenges in certain battle facilities.

Memorial Ribbons
* In Generation III, the facility is the Battle Tower located in an island in Hoenn's southeastern sea, only accessible by boat.
:See also: List of Memorial Ribbons
* In Generation IV, the facility is the Battle Tower located north of Fight Area in Sinnoh or west of Olivine City in Johto.
Memorial Ribbons (Japanese:??? ???) are normally given after fulfilling an in-game accomplishment. If ever every Pokémon in the player's party can obtain the Ribbon, they first Pokémon is the only one given the Ribbon. There are a total of fifteen Memorial Ribbons.
* In Generation VI, the facility is the Battle Maison located in Kiloude City in Kalos or in the Battle Resort in Hoenn.
* In Generation VII, the facility is the Battle Tree located in Poni Island in Alola.

Gift Ribbons
In the Generation III Battle Tower in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, two Ribbons are awarded for clearing the Level 50 Battle Tower and the Level 100/Open Level Battle Tower. Ribbons are awarded to party Pokémon upon completion of the eighth consecutive Battle Tower challenge (defeating 56 Trainers in a row) and for completion of any challenge thereafter if a Pokémon does not already have a Ribbon.
:See also: List of Gift Ribbons
Gift Ribbons (Japanese:??? ???) are normally found already with Pokémon given to the player, such as event Pokémon. Unlike most other Ribbons, Gift Ribbons are not simply given to a Pokémon already under the player.

There are "Pokémon Event" and "Pokémon Festival" Ribbons which have been distributed at Pokémon events and festivals. The description of these Ribbons may be "A commemorative Ribbon obtained at a mystery location." if the player has yet to obtain a Pokémon with one of these Ribbons themselves from an event - only obtaining a Pokémon with one from a trade.
In the Generation IV Battle Tower, one Ribbon is awarded for defeating Tower Tycoon Palmer the first time in a challenge, and one for defeating him the second time. Three additional Ribbons are rewarded for winning 50 times in a row in Double Battles, Multi Battles against the CPU, or Multi Battles with someone, and another Ribbon is awarded for reaching Rank 5 in the Wi-Fi mode.

Gift Ribbons available after Generation III normally prohibit Pokémon with them from being traded in the Global Trade Station.
In Generation VI, two Ribbons are rewarded for defeating a Battle Chatelaine in either a normal battle or a super battle at the Battle Maison. In Generation VII, two Ribbons are awarded for winning against a Battle Legend in the Battle Tree.

Other Ribbons
Any Tower Ribbons obtained in Generation III are retained if a Pokémon that has them is transferred to Generation IV or Generation V, and any Tower Ribbons earned in Generation IV are retained into Generation V, but if a Pokémon with any Tower Ribbons is transferred from Generation V to Generation VI through Poké Transporter, the Ribbons will be consolidated into a Battle Memory Ribbon.
:See also: List of other Ribbons
Many Ribbons were made available as prizes from tournaments, among many events, in Generation III and only in that Generation; they could not be transferred to other Generations.

On the other hand, six Ribbons available in Generation III and/or IV data have no longer been made available in Generation V.
Memorial Ribbons
List of Ribbons in the games#Memorial Ribbons
Memorial Ribbons (Japanese: メモリーリボン Memory Ribbons) are usually awarded for an in-game achievement, but some require nothing more than talking to the correct NPC at the correct time. They are often awarded only to the first Pokémon in the player's party, but some are awarded to all members of the player's party.

Tournament Ribbons
Gift Ribbons
Some of these Ribbons may have been awarded to players who won tournaments at Pokémon events in Japan. Other Ribbons were never handed out.
List of Ribbons in the games#Gift Ribbons
Gift Ribbons (Japanese: プレゼントリボン Present Ribbons), in contrast to all other types, cannot be obtained in-game in core series Pokémon games. Most are found on event Pokémon. The List of Ribbons in the games and the List of Ribbons in the games can be earned in Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness.

There are Ribbons for Regional, National, and Global tournaments for 2003, 2004, and 2005. Each has a Champion Ribbon, a Runner-Up Ribbon, and a Semifinalist Ribbon.
Some Gift Ribbons prohibit Pokémon with them from being traded over the GTS or through Wonder Trade.

Additional Ribbons are:

* Pokémon Tournament Participation Ribbon
Pokémon Center Ribbons
There are Ribbons for the Pokémon Centers in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, and New York.

Holiday Ribbons
These variable descriptions were removed in the Generation V games.

Unlike the games, Ribbons are not attached to individual Pokémon. Instead, they are more akin to Badges earned at Gyms. They are considered proof that a Coordinator has won a particular Contest. Unlike with Badges, Coordinators only get a single chance of earning a particular Ribbon in a certain Contest within a particular time period. They also must compete with other Coordinators to earn it.
In the anime, Ribbons are not attached to individual Pokémon like in the games. Instead, they can be compared to Badges received from Gym Leaders in that they are considered proof that a Pokémon Coordinator has won a Pokémon Contest. In contrast with Gym Badges, Coordinators only get one chance of earning a particular Ribbon in a certain Pokémon Contest within a specific time period. They also must compete with other Coordinators to earn it.

Once a Coordinator earns five Ribbons, they are able to enter and compete in the Grand Festival, the Contest equivalent of the Pokémon League tournament. Ribbons also do not expire, and multiple years can be used to collect the five needed ribbons for the Grand Festival. However, after competing in the Festival, the five cannot be used in another Grand Festival. In addition, Ribbons can only be use in the Grand Festival of the region where they are earned, with the exception of some.
Ribbons are awarded by the Chief of the Pokémon Activities Committee, Raoul Contesta, and once a Coordinator collects five Ribbons, they are able to enter the Grand Festival and compete for the title of Top Coordinator. Ribbons do not expire, and multiple years can be used to collect the five needed for the Grand Festival. However, after being used to enter the competition, the five Ribbons cannot be used again. In addition, Ribbons can only be used in the Grand Festival of the region where they were earned, with the notable exception of the Ribbon.

In the Pokémon Adventures manga, two Pokédex holders, Ruby and Platinum, have obtained Ribbons. In addition to the main characters, some other characters have been seen with Ribbons in their possession.
History
Ruby & Sapphire
Ruby obtained 20 Hoenn Pokémon Contest Ribbons as a part of a bet with Sapphire. He also had obtained eleven unknown Ribbons prior to the events of the chapter.
Notably, Magma Admin is seen burning a Ribbon in Going to Eleven with Loudred & Exploud I.
Diamond & Pearl
Platinum obtained a Normal Rank Cool Contest Ribbon. Later Dr. Footstep gave her, as well as Diamond and Pearl, a List of Ribbons in the games as a sign of the bond between them and their Pokémon.
