Rattata (Pokémon): Difference between revisions

Alolan Rattata appears to be based on the {{wp|black rat}} and the {{wp|Polynesian rat}}, an {{wp|invasive species}} in {{wp|Hawaii}}. Their regular attacks on sugar cane fields caused the locals to import the {{wp|Javan mongoose}} into Hawaii as a form of pest control, explaining the relationship between {{p|Yungoos}} and Rattata. Alolan Rattata is also reminiscent of a {{wp|gangster}} due to its thieving behavior and tendency to work in groups under the command of a {{p|Raticate}}. The shape of its whiskers resembles the knot of a ''hokkamuri'' - a cloth wrapped around the head and tied under nose as a form of disguise, typically worn by thieves in Japanese media for comedic effect.

Rattata may be a combination of ''rat'' and ''attack'', evident from its prototype name, ''Rattatak''.<ref>[http://www.reocities.com/Tokyo/Fuji/4362/019RATTATAK.JPG]</ref> It may also incorporate the onomatopoeic word ''rat-a-tat''.

Koratta may be a combination of 子 ''ko'' (child) and ''Ratta'' ({{p|Raticate}}'s Japanese name), leaning toward the meaning "child Ratta." It may also be a combination of 小 ''ko'' (small) and ''rat''.
