Bulbanews has multiple articles related to this subject:

Both games were revealed during a worldwide announcement by Satoru Iwata through Nintendo Direct at 8 PM JST, on January 8, 2013. The paired versions will be released worldwide on October 2013.

The game will feature 3D models for the characters and the Pokémon instead of sprites, as well as an enhanced 3D world. The battle system is aesthetically overhauled, featuring more lively reactions to the attacks, such as when a Pokémon is being hit. The home region is likely to be based off from Europe, since there seemed to be a Eiffel Tower based structure in the trailer.
