Grass shows the {{p|Bulbasaur}} evolutionary line. The cover shows {{p|Victreebel}}, {{p|Vileplume}}, {{p|Gloom}}, {{p|Tangela}}, {{p|Weepinbell}}, {{p|Bellsprout}}, {{p|Paras}}, {{p|Parasect}}, and {{p|Oddish}}. Ash says he just caught a Bulbasaur while {{an|Misty}} bets it's cute. It then shows and states a strange seed is planted on the back of a Bulbasaur and it grows as it grows. Ash then tells Bulbasaur to use {{m|Leech Seed}} on {{p|Geodude}} to sap its energy. Flipping the page shows {{p|Ivysaur}} and it says that while the seed grows that Ivysaur loves the ability to stand on its hind legs. Ash then has it attacking several Pokémon: hitting {{p|Pidgey}} with {{m|Vine Whip}}, dusting {{p|Omanyte}} with {{m|PoisonPowder}}, and attacking {{p|Hitmonlee}} with {{m|Razor Leaf}}. Flipping to the last page shows {{p|Venusaur}}. It says that the plant on its back absorbs sunlight and moves to seek sunlight. It blasts a {{p|Poliwrath}} with {{m|SolarBeam}}, blankets {{p|Sandslash}} with {{m|Sleep Powder}}, and uses {{m|Growth}} to increase its special abilities.

Ghost shows the {{p|Gastly}} evolutionary line. The cover shows {{TRT}} along with {{TRM}} running away from a Gastly owned by [[Ash Ketchum]] who states even bad guys are scared of his {{type|Ghost}} Pokémon. It says that it is almost invisible and cloaks the target and uses {{m|Sleep Powder}} without being noticed. {{p|Haunter}} is shown using Confuse Ray on {{p|Exeggcute}} and {{m|Night Shade}} on {{p|Starmie}}. It says since Haunter can go through block walls that people believe it comes from [[extraterrestrial Pokémon|another dimension]]. {{p|Gengar}} is seen putting a {{p|Slowbro}} to sleep with {{m|Hypnosis}} and using {{m|Dream Eater}} on a sleeping {{p|Mr. Mime}}.

Bug shows the {{p|Caterpie}} evolutionary line. The cover shows {{p|Venomoth}}, {{p|Pinsir}}, {{p|Weedle}}, {{p|Kakuna}}, {{p|Beedrill}}, {{p|Paras}}, {{p|Parasect}}, {{p|Venonat}}, and {{p|Scyther}}. Ash tells Pikachu he just caught a Caterpie. [[Samurai]] states he won't rest until he has trained all bug Pokémon. Caterpie is stated to have suction pads on the tip of its little feet that allow it to climb slops and walls tirelessly. It then slows down an Oddish using {{m|String Shot}}. Flipping the page shows {{p|Metapod}}. It says its body is weak when the shell is soft making it vulnerable to attack. Ash tells it to use {{m|Harden}} and says Weepinbell will get tired out before Metapod can be hurt. Flipping to the last page shows {{p|Butterfree}}. It says it flaps its wings fast during battle to release highly {{m|Toxic}} dust into the air. It sends Gloom to sleep using Sleep Powder. Butterfree is then seen making a [[Pokémon battle|battle]] end by using {{m|Whirlwind}} on Hypno. Butterfree then uses Psybeam on Tangela to confuse it.

Fire shows the {{p|Charmander}} evolutionary line. The cover shows {{p|Ponyta}}, {{p|Rapidash}}, {{p|Growlithe}}, {{p|Arcanine}}, {{p|Vulpix}}, {{p|Ninetales}}, and {{p|Flareon}}. Ash enthusiastically claims he will capture a Charmander, and [[Gary Oak|Gary]] claims that he will catch one first. Charmander is shown on the first page and is given the description: "Obviously prefers hot places. When it rains, steam is said to spout from the tip of Charmander's tail." At the bottom, it shows Ash commanding Charmander to use {{m|Scratch}} on a {{p|Venonat}}. Charmeleon is featured on the second page, stating: "When Charmeleon swings its burning tail, it elevates the temperature to unbearably high levels." Charmeleon is then shown using {{m|Ember}} on an {{p|Exeggutor}}, {{m|Leer}}, and {{m|Rage}} on a {{p|Parasect}}. The final page features {{p|Charizard}}, and the description states: "Charizard spits fire that is hot enough to melt boulders. It is known to cause forest fires unintentionally." It then features Charizard using {{m|Fire Spin}} on an {{p|Arbok}}, scorching a {{p|Victreebel}} with {{m|Flamethrower}}, and cutting a {{p|Beedrill}} with {{m|Slash}}.

Psychic shows the {{p|Abra}} evolutionary line. The cover shows {{p|Hypno}}, {{p|Mewtwo}}, {{p|Jynx}}, {{p|Slowpoke}}, {{p|Mr. Mime}}, {{p|Slowbro}}, and a {{p|Drowzee}}. Ash asks [[Ash's Pikachu|Pikachu]] if he [[Mind Reader|read]] his mind. Despite all the Pokémon present, Ash says he was about to choose an Abra. Opening to the first page shows Abra posing. It says it uses its [[ability]] to read minds. Abra will {{m|teleport}} away from impending danger. Abra is shown to be nearly attacked by a {{p|Fearow}} and Ash tells it to Teleport away to safety. On the next page, Ash through a voice bubble tells {{p|Kadabra}} to use {{m|Disable}} so {{p|Machop}} can't use {{m|Karate Chop}} and is seen giving the Machop a headache simply by being close by and emitting alpha waves. It is then shown using {{m|Confusion}} on {{p|Bulbasaur}} to make it unaware of what is going on. It then uses {{m|Psybeam}} on a {{p|Weepinbell}} to confuse it. On the last page, {{p|Alakazam}} is seen protecting itself from {{p|Hitmonchan}} by using {{m|Reflect}}. Alakazam is then asked to use {{m|Recover}} to heal. Alakazam then proceeds to use {{m|Psychic}} on {{p|Mankey}} to make it weaker. Alakazam's brain is stated that it can outperform a Supercomputer and has an IQ said to be 5,000.

Fighting shows the {{p|Machop}} evolutionary line. The cover shows {{p|Mankey}}, {{p|Primeape}}, {{p|Hitmonlee}}, {{p|Hitmonchan}}, and {{p|Poliwrath}}. Ash enthusiastically tells Pikachu to look at the moves of the Fighting Pokémon, while Master Trainer [[Bruno]] introduces himself as one of the [[Elite Four]] and comments that training Fighting Pokémon is hard work but worth it in the end. Machop is shown on the first page and says that it loves to build muscles and trains in all martial arts to become stronger. At the bottom, it shows Ash commanding Machop to use {{m|Karate Chop}} on a {{p|Raticate}}. Flipping the page shows a Machoke posing, and says that its muscular body is so powerful that it must wear a power-save belt to regulate its motions. Machoke is shown to use {{m|Leer}}, {{m|Low Kick}} on a {{p|Meowth}} and a [[Critical hit]] {{m|Focus Energy}} on a {{p|Chansey}}. The last page shows Machamp leaning forward and states it can throw powerful punches that send its victim right over the horizon. It shows it using {{m|Submission}} on a {{p|Tauros}}, and {{m|Seismic Toss}} on a {{p|Jigglypuff}}.

Rock shows the {{p|Geodude}} evolutionary line. The cover shows {{p|Onix}}, {{p|Rhyhorn}}, {{p|Rhydon}}, {{p|Kabuto}}, {{p|Kabutops}}, {{p|Omanyte}}, {{p|Omastar}}, and {{p|Aerodactyl}}. Holding a Poké Ball forward, Ash exclaims that Rock-type Pokémon are strong and that he'd like to get a Geodude. On the other side, James also also wishes that he had a Geodude, while Jessie rebuts saying sometimes James' head was nothing but a rock. Geodude is shown on the first page and states that it is found in fields and mountains but is often mistaken for boulders. At the bottom, it shows Ash commanding Geodude to use {{m|Tackle}} on a {{p|Growlithe}}. Flipping the page shows {{p|Graveler}}, and says that it rolls down slopes to move and rolls over any obstacle without slowing or changing its direction. Graveler is shown to use {{m|Rock Throw}}, {{m|Defense Curl}} and {{m|Self-Destruct}} on a {{p|Scyther}}. On the last page, {{p|Golem}} is seen using {{m|Harden}}. Golem is also shown using {{m|Earthquake}} on {{p|Rapidash}} and {{m|Submission}} on {{p|Pinsir}}. Golem's boulder-like body is stated to be extremely hard and that it can easily withstand dynamite blasts without damage.
