Picnic

Picnics (Japanese: ピクニック Picnic) are a feature in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet that allow the player to care for their Pokémon in various ways. It is similar to Pokémon-Amie, Pokémon Refresh, and Pokémon Camp, but picnics also introduce the option for players to make sandwiches, visit other player's picnics via the Union Circle, and breed Pokémon to produce Eggs.

Picnics can be accessed from the menu except for when the player is on water or a steep slope, riding a Pokémon, in a city, town, or Area Zero, too close to a non-player character, or if there is not enough room.

Features

Playing

During picnics, the player can speak to their Pokémon and use toys to play with them. Specifically, the player can throw a ball, which their Pokémon may chase and kick around. The player can choose a different ball to play with by interacting with the picnic table. The player can also whistle to call their Pokémon back to them, and can recall and bring out Koraidon^S/Miraidon^V from their Poké Ball.

Pokémon Wash

Over time, Pokémon can get dirty from battling or from harsh weather. They can get covered in mud from the road, snow from snowstorms, and sand from sandstorms. The player's Koraidon^S/Miraidon^V can also become dirty while riding them. A player can wash their Pokémon by approaching them during a picnic. Through Pokémon Wash—coined by Saguaro—the player can scrub their Pokémon with a soapy Mareep sponge and then rinse them off. This can restore the Pokémon's HP, cure status conditions, and raise the Pokémon's friendship and experience. Some Pokémon have certain parts of their bodies that they do not like getting scrubbed or rinsed, while some Pokémon do not like being cleaned at all.

Picnics are used for breeding in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, replacing the Pokémon Day Care and Pokémon Nursery from previous games. When the player has two Pokémon in the party that can breed, an Egg will occasionally appear in the picnic basket found at one end of the picnic table. Eating a sandwich that grants Egg Power will increase the likelihood of finding Eggs in the picnic basket. Unwanted Eggs can be donated to the academy instead of being added to the player's party or sent to a Box.

Through the Union Circle, players can visit each other's picnics and receive each other's Eggs.

Making sandwiches

Sandwiches can be prepared at a player's picnic by interacting with the table and selecting to make a sandwich. Sandwiches can be cooked by up to four players in a mini-game, similarly to Pokéblocks, Poffins, and curry in previous games. After the host of a picnic chooses to make sandwiches, any other members of the Union Circle can opt to join in by interacting with the table before the host starts the session.

Customization

Picnics can be customized with various tablecloths, water bottles, and cups. Sandwiches can be adorned with a variety of picks, which come in a range of colors and shapes.

In the anime, the picnic concept was used well before its introduction in Generation IX. Multiple times, Ash and his friends would have a picnic during their journey through a region, and sometimes, this would be the starting point of the plot of some episodes.

In An Unexpected Picnic!, a picnic with the concepts presented in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet occurred. The Rising Volt Tacklers had a picnic outside Levincia while waiting for the Brave Olivine's systems to reboot.
