Pain Split (Japanese: いたみわけ Pain Split) is a non-damaging Normal-type move introduced in Generation II. Prior to Generation IV, it was the signature move of Misdreavus.

Effect

Generation II

Pain Split adds the current HP of the user and target Pokémon. It then divides this value by two, rounds down if necessary, and increases or decreases the HP of each Pokémon to become equal to the result (limited by each Pokémon's maximum HP). This setting of HP is not subject to effects such as Counter or Bide. Pain Split does not employ type effectiveness, so it can also affect Ghost-type Pokémon.

Pain Split has an accuracy of 100.

Pain Split fails if the target is behind a substitute.

Generation III

Pain Split now bypasses accuracy checks to always hit, unless the target is in the semi-invulnerable turn of a move such as Dig or Fly.

In Generation III only, a loss of HP due to Pain Split contributes to the accumulated damage of Bide; it still is not subject to other effects such as Counter.

Pain Split can be used as the second move of a Pokémon Contest combination, with the user gaining 1 bonus appeal point if Endure was used in the previous turn.

Generation IV onwards

Pain Split can no longer contribute to the accumulated damage of Bide.

It is also part of a Contest Spectacular combination and will give an extra three appeal points if the move Endure was used in the prior turn.

If powered up by a Normalium Z into Z-Pain Split, the user's Defense stat rises by one stage.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series

In Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team, and Explorers of Time, Darkness and Sky, Pain Split is a move with 22PP and 100% accuracy. It targets enemy in the front, distributing its and user's HP equally between the two. This move is affected by Taunt.

Pokémon UNITE

In Pokémon UNITE, Pain Split is Trevenant's first move. It is obtained by reaching level 7 and upgrading Branch Poke into it instead of Horn Leech. The user creates a link between them and a designated enemy for 6s. While the link holds, a portion of the damage the user receives is redirected to the linked enemy. The lower the user's remaining HP, the greater the percentage of damage that is redirected. Additionally, if the user's percentage of remaining HP is lower than the linked enemy, this move continuously deals damage and recovers the user's HP equal to the damage dealt every .5s. If the user and the linked enemy are too far apart, the link will disappear. Using this move increases the user's movement speed for a short time. At level 13, the link's duration is increased to 8.5s.

Trivia

  • In Generation III, the status screen erroneously states that the move has 100% accuracy, even though it ignores accuracy and evasion checks.
  • If Shedinja uses Pain Split (via Mimic), it will cut the target's HP in half, similarly to Super Fang.
