Wake Up—You're Snorlax! (Japanese: VS カビゴン VS Kabigon) is the 12th chapter of the Pokémon Adventures manga.

Plot

Spoiler warning: this article may contain major plot or ending details.

On Route 11, Red and several other cyclists line up for a bicycle race. Chairtarō elaborates the route, indicating it's an easy course on well-marked roads, at least, besides something he gestures to on the map, but neglects to elaborate on, saying that some things should stay a surprise.

A countdown sends the cyclists off, Red quickly falling into last, struggling to get up any speed. He wants to get the first place prize to make up for the fee he had to pay to enter the race, and starts to regret having exchanged a Bike Voucher he got from the Pokémon Fan Club Chairman for a bicycle. He considers dropping out, until he notices lots of other cyclists stopped up ahead, gathering together in a large group. It's revealed the hold up is caused by the cyclists having to cross a narrow bridge one at a time over a river filled with Tentacruel. A participating Swimmer stands proud, letting Red know that it's more than just a race, it's also an obstacle course, and in situations like these you can use your own Pokémon, as he crosses the river on his Slowpoke.

With newfound confidence, Red calls out Poli, commanding him to create a bridge using Ice Beam, allowing him to quickly bike to the other side. Reaching a fork, Red finds the other cyclists opting to go the longer way instead of a shorter route through a thick forest. Ignoring the warning of a Bug Catcher that the forest is infested with Bug-types, Red decides to keep his lead by going through anyways. Full speed ahead, Pika uses his electricity as they ride through the forest to knock out all the wild Pokémon they come across. Red commands Saur to use Razor Leaf to cut through the thick foliage, but as they ride through, a Beedrill hive falls on Saur's head, drawing the anger of several Beedrill that begin to chase after them. As Red exits the forest, he reminds himself that every shortcut has a big cost, him and his Pokémon covered in stings.

In high spirits after seeing how far ahead they are after passing through the forest, Red begins the last leg of the race. Chairtarō announces that a Swimmer and Bug Catcher are currently in first and second, with Red being a surprising third. He wonders who will win the first place prize, being Pokémon items along with 10,000 dollars.

Reaching the fishing pier on Route 12, the two competitors ahead of Red have their path blocked by a massive dark mass, presuming it to be impassible. Red arrives, and realizes it's a slumbering Snorlax, and commits to having to catch it to be able to get past it, knowing how hard they are to wake up. Poli tries to attack the sleeping Pokémon several times, but simply bounces off its flesh each time. The Swimmer muses that the only thing that will wake up a Snorlax is food, giving Red an idea, asking it if it wants a snack.

Snorlax weakly opens its eyes and looks down at Red, as he picks up his Bulbasaur, still coated in Beedrill honey. The smell wafts through the air as Snorlax begins to drool. Back at the finish line, Chairtarō says he can see people approaching, but can't yet make out who. He invites some cheers for the prospective winners, until he realizes it's not a bike, it's Red being chased by a very hungry Snorlax, which collapses on top of Red just as he makes it over the finish line. Later, his Pokémon celebrate the victory and the prize HM they won, as Red bemoans having to spend every last dollar on food for his Snorlax.

Trivia

  • The race is sponsored by Miracle Cycle.
  • In the bike race, Pokémon are allowed to be used. This ruling is similar to the race that was featured in the Pokémon anime episode, The Flame Pokémon-athon!.
  • In the VIZ Media English translation of the manga, Red comments that he borrowed his bike from the Chairman of the Pokémon Fan Club. However, in the Japanese original he mentions exchanging the voucher that he got from the chairman, which is true to the games' plot.
  • The area where Snorlax is sleeping is directly based on one of its positions in the games, which would be Route 12.

Errors

  • In the VIZ Media first edition, when Red commands Saur to use Razor Leaf he refers to it by its Japanese name, Leaf Cutter. This was corrected in the 2009 second edition printing.
