A Move Reminder (Japanese: 技思い出し Move Reminder, also わざおしえマニア Move-Teaching Maniac), sometimes called a move relearner by fans, is a character who can teach a Pokémon any move that its species is able to learn by leveling up, and from Generation VI onward, special moves that it has forgotten (such as Egg Moves). The Move Reminder usually requires a Heart Scale in exchange for their services.

In Galar, there is no traditional Move Reminder; instead, Jack offers to teach Pokémon moves they had forgotten (among other services).

Teachable moves

From Generation II to VI and in Generation VIII, the Move Reminder can teach a Pokémon any move that its species is able to learn at an earlier level. In Generation VII, the Move Reminder can teach a Pokémon any move it can learn via level-up, including moves it would learn at higher levels.

From Generation VI onward, any Pokémon hatched in Generation VI onward may also be taught any move it knew when it hatched; this includes not only Egg Moves, but any other moves it knew when hatched as well (such as Volt Tackle bred onto Pichu and level-up moves known upon hatching). Also in these games, Pokémon obtained via Mystery Gift can learn any specifically flagged move it knew when it was obtained; early Generation VI distributions only flag event-exclusive moves (such as the Pokémon Center Tokyo Bay Inkay's Happy Hour) and Egg Moves, whereas later Generation VI distributions and all Generation VII distributions flag all moves the Pokémon knows when obtained except moves introduced part-way through that generation.

Special moves known due to being a hidden Pokémon in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire or an Island Scan Pokémon in Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon can also be taught by the Move Reminder if forgotten. Egg Moves known by Brilliant Pokémon or transferred through a Pokémon Nursery in Generation VIII cannot be relearned.

The Move Reminder can only teach a Pokémon moves that its species can learn; they cannot teach moves exclusive to a pre-evolution. In particular, prior to Generation VIII, many Pokémon that evolve by Evolution stone have a very restricted set of level-up moves in their evolved forms compared to their unevolved forms.

Certain Pokémon may also be taught moves via the Move Reminder that they would not normally learn until a later level or at all by leveling up. For example, in Generation VI, while Lopunny normally learns Healing Wish at level 63 by leveling up, due to also being coded to learn Healing Wish at level 1 (at a level at which it is not normally obtainable), it can also be taught Healing Wish by a Move Reminder at any level. Other moves can only be taught this way for reasons such as the Pokémon not being able to be obtained at a low enough level (e.g. Zapdos and Ancient Power starting in Generation IV) or the species having more than four starting moves (e.g. Kecleon).

In Generation VIII, in addition to level-up moves and special moves, Pokémon can also be taught any move they had previously learned via TR but forgotten.

Restrictions

Like all methods of teaching moves (other than Pokémon Day Care), the Move Reminder cannot overwrite HM moves.

In Pokémon XD, if a Pokémon has four moves, the Move Reminder will not be able to teach it a move until the Move Deleter deletes one of the Pokémon's current moves.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team/Rescue Team DX

Gulpin Link Shop (Japanese: ゴクリンの連結店) allows the player to remember forgotten techniques. However, Gulpin cannot teach Deoxys moves it has forgotten, saying it's a "special" Pokémon.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness/Explorers of Sky

Electivire's Link Shop allows the player to remember forgotten techniques. However, Electivire cannot teach Deoxys moves it has forgotten, saying it's a "special" Pokémon. The shop opens after the player gains access to Apple Woods.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon (WiiWare)

Slaking Move Relearner can teach the player's Pokémon attacks which it has forgotten, but only those that it can learn via level-up.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity

Scraggy's Savvy Moves is unlocked after completing Desolate Canyon for the first time. Acting as the Move Deleter and Move Reminder for this game, Scraggy changes the Pokémon's moves.

Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon

Hawlucha runs Hawlucha's Slam School, where the player can relearn their teammates' forgotten moves or change their Abilities.

Quotes

Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald

  • When the player speaks to him
"I'm the Move Tutor. I know all the moves that Pokémon learn - every one of them - and I can teach Pokémon those moves. I can teach a move to a Pokémon of yours if you'd like. I'll do it for a Heart Scale. I'm collecting those now."
  • If the player has a Heart Scale
"Oh! That's it! That's an honest to goodness Heart Scale! Let me guess, you want me to teach a move?"
Yes: "Which Pokémon needs tutoring?"
  • If the selected Pokémon cannot be taught a move
"Sorry… It doesn't appear as if I have any move I can teach that Pokémon." (Returns to previous question.)
  • If the selected Pokémon can be taught a move
"Which move should I teach?"
  • The last thing he always says

Yes: "Which Pokémon needs tutoring?"
  • If the selected Pokémon cannot be taught a move
"Sorry… It doesn't appear as if I have a move I can teach that Pokémon." (Returns to previous question.)

  • The last thing he always says
"If your Pokémon need to learn a move, I need a Mushroom or two."

Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness

All it takes are some Poké Coupons for me, the Move Teacher, to teach your Pokémon those moves you want and a whole lot more! So, are there any Pokémon that want to learn a new move or two?"
No: "There'll be times like this. Drop in when you need me."
Yes:

  • If the player doesn't have enough Poké Coupons
