Mienshao seems to be based on an {{wp|Stoat|ermine}} and also seems to have drawn inspiration from {{wp|whip fighting}} as well as a variety of martial arts, such as {{wp|Taekwondo}} and {{wp|Kokondo}}. The fur on its arms also resemble the ''shuixiu'' (水袖) or "water sleeves", which are long, white, flowing sleeves used by performers of {{wp|Chinese opera}}s to express the emotions of their character.

Mienshao's Purple color seems to be a reference to the 13 Shaolin monks that helped rescuing a {{wp|Emperor Taizong of Tang|Tang dynasty emperor}}, since purple robes were part of the rewards. During the Tang Dynasty, these robes were given to high-level monks.
