A '''Mega Stone''' (Japanese: '''メガストーン''' ''Mega Stone'') is a type of [[item]] introduced in [[Generation VI]] that, if activated with a [[Key Stone]], causes a specific {{OBP|Pokémon|species}} to undergo [[Mega Evolution]]. [[Professor Sycamore]] theorizes that Mega Stones are the results of [[Evolution stone]]s being irradiated by the power of {{p|Xerneas}}{{sup/6|X}} or {{p|Yveltal}}{{sup/6|Y}}, the [[Legendary Pokémon]] of life and destruction, when [[AZ]] first used the [[ultimate weapon]].<ref>"''Let’s talk about Mega Stones briefly. My theory is that they’re special stones irradiated by the light--the energy of the Legendary Pokémon [Xerneas or Yveltal]--fired from the ultimate weapon 3,000 years ago.''" -Professor Sycamore</ref> There are 47 known Mega Stones, corresponding to 45 different Pokémon.

From [[Generation VIII]] to [[Pokémon Scarlet and Violet]], Mega Stones (and Mega Evolution) do not appear in the [[core series]], but they do appear in other media.

 

During {{pkmn|battle}}, a Mega Stone can be activated while its corresponding {{OBP|Pokémon|species}} is on the field. The stone must be held by the Pokémon or, in [[Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!|Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!]] (which do not feature [[held item]]s), be in the possession of the Pokémon's {{pkmn|Trainer}}. The Pokémon's Trainer can use their [[Key Stone]] to activate the Mega Stone at the start of a turn, causing the Pokémon to undergo [[Mega Evolution]]. Mega Stones are not consumed upon use, but only one Mega Stone use is possible per Trainer per battle. Mega Stones cannot be activated for Pokémon that have transformed into their corresponding Pokémon (either by {{m|Transform}} or {{a|Imposter}}).

 

 

 

Some Mega Stones are given or sold to the player by NPCs. Most others can be found in various locations around [[Kalos]], appearing as sparkles on the ground rather than [[item ball]]s. These can only be found after [[Professor Sycamore]] upgrades the player's [[Mega Ring]] in [[Anistar City]], which only happens after the player defeats their [[rival]] in [[Kiloude City]]. These Mega Stones also only appear from <time datetime="20:00:00">{{#time:H:i|20:00:00}}</time> to <time datetime="20:59:59>{{#time:H:i|20:59:59}}</time>, while the Anistar Sundial is active. Some Mega Stones are exclusive to each game.

 

The Blazikenite, Latiasite, and Latiosite are only obtainable via [[trade]]. However, the former was also an [[event item]]. Mega Stones introduced in {{pkmn|Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire}} are unobtainable.

 

 

 

Pokémon holding Mega Stones introduced in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire (except the Latiasite and Latiosite) cannot be traded to X and Y.

 

No Mega Stones are received before the player becomes {{pkmn|Champion}}. The player receives an Alakazite, along with a Key Stone, from [[Dexio]] after defeating him at [[Ancient Poni Path]]{{sup/7|SM}} or [[Poni Plains]]{{sup/7|USUM}}. The Kanto {{pkmn2|first partner}}s' Mega Stones can be received by defeating {{ga|Red}}{{sup/7|SMUSUM}} or {{ga|Blue}}{{sup/7|USUM}} in a challenge at the [[Battle Tree]]. Many Mega Stones (including the Alakazite) can be purchased at the Battle Tree for 64[[Battle Point|BP]] each. In {{pkmn|Sun and Moon}}, only the Mega Stones for Pokémon in the {{OBP|List of Pokémon by Alola Pokédex number|Sun and Moon|Alola Pokédex}} can be purchased. In {{pkmn|Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon}}, all Mega Stones except the Kanto first partners' and the Diancite can be purchased.

 

In Sun and Moon, the remaining Mega Stones are only obtainable via trade. However, they were all also event items. They were distributed via [[List of other event distributions (Generation VII)|universal serial code]]s provided on the official Pokémon website, which were usable in all [[software region]]s but expired on <time datetime="2017-10-31 23:59:59">{{#dateformat:2017-10-31|mdy}} at {{#time:H:i T|23:59:59}}</time>. Some were also distributed via unique serial codes to players who participated in certain [[List of Online Competitions (Generation VII)|Online Competitions]] on the [[Pokémon Global Link]].

 

 

 

 

Before a Pokémon's Mega Evolution can be used in Pokémon Shuffle, its respective Mega Stone must be obtained (or in {{p|Rayquaza}}'s case, the [[File:Meteorite Shuffle.png|link=]] [[Meteorite]]). Methods to obtain a Mega Stone include:

 

 

 

 

Mega Stones were first mentioned in ''[[XY002|Lumiose City Pursuit!]]'', where {{an|Professor Sycamore}} told {{Ash}} that a "special stone" is required to trigger Mega Evolution, referring to Mega Stones.
