Mantine (Japanese: マンタイン Mantain) is a dual-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II.

Biology
Physiology
Mantine is a large, manta ray-like Pokémon with wide fins and two ring-shaped marks on its back. Its back is a dark blue with a jagged outline on its wings. It has a streamer-like tail and long "antennae". Two pairs of gills are visible on its gray underside, as well as a pair of beady eyes and a small mouth. Generally, it is pictured with a Remoraid attached to the underside of one wing, much like a cleaner fish. Mantine can fly 300 feet into the air if it builds up enough speed, in a similar manner to how real-life manta rays breach the surface. Mantine is mostly docile. It thrives in List of Pokémon by habitat.
Mantine's appearance changes from that of its pre-evolution in several ways. It is larger, has wider fins, and loses its original back markings, which are replaced by two ring-shaped marks. Its coloration is also greyer, and its back is a darker blue, along with gaining a wavy outline on its wings. It gains a streamer-like tail and longer "antennae". It also possesses two pairs of gill slits on its underside. Generally, it is pictured with a Remoraid attached to its underside, much like a cleaner fish.

Gender differences
In Alola, many surfers ride waves and travel between islands on the backs of Mantine. This has made it an icon in the region, being featured on souvenir postcards and posters.
None.

In the anime
Major appearances
Recurring wild Pokémon in the anime
A Mantine appeared in the Where Are You Going, Eevee? segment at the end of A Haunted House for Everyone!, where it befriended a wild Eevee. By the Where Are You Going, Eevee? segment at the end of Don't Ignore the Small Stufful!, Mantine delivered Eevee to Melemele Island of the Alola region, bade farewell to it, and headed back out to sea.

Special abilities
Other
Unlike real-life manta rays, which can only "fly" through water, Mantine can fly in the air if they gain enough speed. They soar gracefully out of the water. Mantine are also able to naturally learn moves considered enigmatic for a Water-type Pokémon, such as Psybeam, Bullet Seed, Signal Beam and Confuse Ray. However, several of these moves can be understood if one takes into consideration the Remoraid that is attached to Mantine's wing, as it learns all of these moves with the exception of Confuse Ray.
Mantine debuted in Spell of the Unown: Entei as one of the illusory Pokémon created by Molly Hale thanks to the power of the Unown. Molly used it as her second Pokémon in her battle against Misty, where it faced off against Misty. The outcome of the battle was left unknown.

Behavior
Mantine made its main series debut in Mantine Overboard!, where it was seen protecting the Silver Wing.
Mantine are mostly docile. They allow Remoraid to latch onto themselves. When they build up speed, they jump out of the water.

Habitat
A Mantine appeared in Just Add Water, under the ownership of Dorian, owner of the unofficial Gym. It was used to attack TRT, defeating them with Bubble Beam. It was later used to battle Misty's Corsola, but it lost.

Diet
Brock's mother, Lola, owns a Mantine, which was used in her battle against Brock's Onix in A Family That Battles Together Stays Together!. It soon lost despite having the type advantage. Mantine reappeared in a fantasy in Grating Spaces!.

Mantine is probably a filter feeder that lives on plankton.
Multiple Mantine appeared in Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea. They briefly reappeared in a montage in The Rise of Darkrai, which chronicled the preceding nine movies.

In the anime
A Mantine appeared in Steamboat Willies!, under the ownership of an old man who owned a ship. It helped Ash and Dawn save the ship from falling off a waterfall. This Mantine was bigger than usual.

Trivia
Trivia
* Mantine can be seen as a parallel to Skarmory. Both of them are Flying Generation II Pokémon. Mantine is exclusive to Gold and Silver and HeartGold and SoulSilver, while Skarmory is exclusive to Gold and Silver and HeartGold and SoulSilver. Furthermore, neither of the two had any evolutions in Gold and Silver.
* Despite the fact that Mantine evolve from Mantyke in the presence of a Remoraid, Remoraid has not been present on any of Mantine's sprites in the main series of games since Generation IV, in which this evolution method was introduced. This may be due to fact that the Remoraid used for evolution doesn't disappear after Mantine evolves from Mantyke.
** They also have the exact same base stats, except that Mantine is oriented towards the special stats, while Skarmory is more based in the physical stats.
* Mantine is tied with Kyogre for having the highest Special Defense out of all Water Pokémon. Mantine also has the highest Special Defense out of all non-legendary Flying-types.
* Mantine is the fourth (and last) Pokémon to have more than one Pokémon in one of its sprites. The first is Kangaskhan, although Kangaskhan is just holding its own baby, not a Pokémon of an entirely different species. The second and third are the morphed Shellder in all of Slowbro's and Slowking's sprites. However, Remoraid is absent from all of its Generation IV and V sprites.
* Mantine's Shiny sprites in the second and third Generations also show the Remoraid attached to it to be an alternate color; however, they are depicted as light blue rather than gray or pink, the usual color of a Shiny Remoraid.
* Despite the fact that Mantine evolve in the presence of a Remoraid, Remoraid is not present on any of Mantine's sprites in the generation the evolution method was introduced nor in the newer generation. This maybe due to fact that the Remoraid used for evolution doesn't disappear after Mantine evolves from Mantyke.

Origin
Origin
It is similar to a manta ray, with some kite-like aspects.
Mantine is similar to a manta ray, with some kite-like aspects. Its flying type seems to be a reference to Mobula, known as such due to their propensity for breaching. Since Remoraid, a Pokémon based on a rifle, often attaches itself to the undersides of Mantine's wings, Mantine may also be based on a fighter plane.
