Arceus and the Jewel of Life (Japanese: アルセウス 超克時空 Arceus: To a Conquering Spacetime) is the third Diamond & Pearl series movie and the twelfth Pokémon movie overall. It is the last movie in the trilogy that started with The Rise of Darkrai and continued with Giratina and the Sky Warrior. It premiered in Japan on July 18, 2009, coincidentally the 11th anniversary of the premiere of the first movie. The movie is also set to air on CN Australia on November 6.

The movie was confirmed in Japanese cinemas in July 2008 at the end of the credits of its predecessor, Giratina and the Sky Warrior, with a teaser that showed Giratina, Dialga and Palkia ready to battle over ruins that resembles the Spear Pillar.

Plot

Template:Spoiler Thousands of years in the past, the legendary Alpha Pokémon Arceus came to Earth to retrieve a "Jewel of Life" that it had loaned to a man named Damos. Damos however betrayed Arceus and attacked it with a large army of Pokémon. After presumably killing Damos in its counterattack, Arceus went to sleep, vowing to judge all humans when it next returns based on Damos's actions.

Ash and his friends reach a beautiful land called Michina Town. As they decide to see its famous ruins, a spatial distortion opens near them and nearly sweeps up Ash's Pikachu and Dawn's Piplup; they are however saved when a girl named Sheena calls Dialga to stop the distortion from spreading. Sheena (who has the ability to communicate with a Pokémon's heart) is a guardian of the city's ruins, and together with her partner Kevin, explains that the battle between Dialga and Palkia was caused by the massive energy surrounding the slowly awakening Arceus. Sheena further explains that long ago, her ancestor Damos betrayed Arceus and stole its Jewel of Life, sending it into a rage that it continued to harbor throughout time. The time that Arceus returns is drawing near, however, and Sheena plans to return the Jewel to Arceus in order to rectify her ancestor's mistake.

Later, another spatial distortion caused by Arceus nearly sweeps up Dialga, so Sheena calls Palkia to defend it, then mediates and ends the conflict between them once and for all. However, the presence of both Dialga and Palkia soon attracts Giratina, who is still enraged at them for damaging its world. The battle between the three gods erupts anew, and Sheena is helpless to stop it as her ability cannot reach a Pokémon whose heart is filled with rage. Giratina only calms when it recalls Ash's help in defeating Zero. Once Sheena finally ends the conflict, the three return to their own worlds.

Soon thereafter, Arceus fully awakens and returns to pass down its Judgment. As Arceus destroys Michīna, Sheena attempts to present it with the Jewel of Life. It briefly calms, then becomes even more enraged when it realizes the Jewel Sheena possesses is a fake. Michīna continues to crumble beneath Arceus's might until Dialga, Palkia and Giratina return to stop it. Palkia is able to subdue Arceus long enough to allow Dialga to send everyone but Kevin back in time to alter the past.

When the group arrives, they see Damos enter the temple with the Jewel of Life on a staff. Following him, they all witness as he betrays Arceus as already known, however, it becomes apparent that another man who is dressed in a red toga and controls a Heatran and Bronzong wearing strange armor is also involved. Furthermore, Damos appears to be under hypnosis of some sort. When Arceus violently counterattacks, Ash and his friends nearly fall to their deaths along with Damos and the other man, but Sheena quickly prays to Dialga again and manages to get it to send them back a bit further in time.

Meanwhile, in the present day, Arceus is gaining the upper hand in its battle against the dragon trio and defeats Dialga.

Ash, Brock, Dawn and Sheena arrive in the afternoon several hours prior to Damos's betrayal. Sheena becomes alarmed when she realizes that Dialga can no longer send them through time, and things get worse when a group of armed soldiers surround them. The man in the toga appears with his Bronzong and has it use Hypnosis on everyone but Sheena. The girl attempts to warn him of what is going to happen, garnering the man's interest, so he orders his guards to take the others away while he interrogates Sheena.

Ash, Brock and Dawn are thrown in a jail cell guarded by an old man and soon realize they are sharing the space with Damos, who appears jovial and in control of himself, unlike what had previously been seen. The group's initial reaction to him is overwhelmingly negative, to which he takes offense. Damos explains that in the past, the world was threatened with destruction through the impact of a gigantic meteor, but Arceus tackled it and destroyed it. In the process Arceus lost the sixteen Plates that gave it life and began to die, so he helped find them and heal it. In return Arceus detached five of the Plates to form the Jewel of Life so Damos could make Michīna, previously a desolate wasteland, rich and fertile. It was to be returned at the date of the next solar eclipse, and Damos claims he has no intention of not returning the Jewel.

After hearing that they were imprisoned by a man with a Bronzong, Damos identifies him as Gishin. Thinking back, Brock realizes that Gishin and Bronzong were present at the scene of Damos's betrayal and theorizes that Gishin was the real mastermind and that he was controlling Damos through Bronzong's Hypnosis.

Gishin, meanwhile, is hosting Sheena at a dinner. She explains everything to him, that Damos is going to betray Arceus and cause the world to be placed in danger, so Gishin agrees to assist her in stopping him. He then walks over to an area obscured by his Heatran and secretly removes the Jewel of Life from its staff before presenting Sheena with the empty staff. Sheena, unknowing of Gishin's true nature, goes off willingly with him to the temple.

Just in the nick of time, a Spiky-eared Pichu that Damos had previously befriended using the same ability as Sheena appears and gives him the jail cell's keys so they can escape.

At the temple, the eclipse begins and Arceus enters. Sheena tells it that Damos is not coming and attempts to give the Jewel to it, only for Gishin to initiate the attack in much the same fashion he forced Damos to. Ash's group arrives and Sheena comes to peace with her ancestor, while Ash confronts the true villain. Using his Monferno, Ash attempts to battle with Gishin, but Heatran is far too strong and overpowers them. Instead, he attempts to defeat Gishin with hand-to-hand combat. This also fails, but Gishin drops the Jewel. It is nearly destroyed but Ash manages to recover it.

Arceus, meanwhile, is losing strength under the force of Gishin's attack, and begins to die when molten silver is poured onto it. Damos and Sheena combine their abilities and are able to touch the hearts of Gishin's Pokémon, which are being controlled by the armor they wear. Ash has Pikachu destroy the armor on Bronzong and Heatran with Iron Tail. This frees them, and they turn on Gishin while the other Pokémon stop their attack. Gishin smugly declares that even if he fails, Arceus will still die, and the future that Ash and his friends came from will cease to exist, meaning they will no longer exist as well. True to his word, Pikachu soon vanishes, and Ash begins to vanish as well as he attempts to give the Jewel of Life to the nearly-dead Arceus. Damos and Sheena, again combining their powers, manage to reach the last spark of life in Arceus's heart, giving it enough strength to reabsorb the Jewel and completely recover. With Gishin's plan thwarted Arceus restores Pikachu to life, then returns Ash's group to their proper time.

Arriving back in the present day, it appears that things have become peaceful due to the changes in the past. However, this is not the case - Arceus has completely defeated Dialga, Palkia and Giratina, and is preparing its final Judgment attack to destroy all of Michīna. Ash cries out to it, begging it to remember that everything was fixed in the past, and just before the attack's destruction begins, Arceus remembers that this is true and halts its rampage. With everything finally back to normal, Arceus heals the three dragons and restores Michīna to its beautiful state, then the four gods bid a final farewell to Ash and his friends and depart for their respective worlds.

In the credits, it is revealed that Gishin went on to become an employee of Damos as a steward of the temple. In Alamos Town, Tonio and Alice fly in a hot air balloon while Baron Alberto attempts to follow them. In a later scene, an imprisoned Zero is seen being visited by Newton Graceland and receiving a copy of Infi that survived the Megarig's wreck, much to his delight.

Trivia

Errors

  • Arceus had transformed into its Dragon form and Grass form during the fight in the movie, yet it should not have been able to transform into those two forms due to the fact that it no longer possesses their respective plates at that particular point in the movie.
    • On a related note, Arceus used Seed Flare even though it is impossible for it to learn that move in the games.
