'''Lyra''' (Japanese: '''コトネ''' ''Kotone'') is the female [[player character]] in {{game|HeartGold and SoulSilver|s}}. Lyra takes over the role from {{ga|Kris}} in {{game|Crystal}}. Her male counterpart is {{ga|Ethan}}.

If {{ga|Ethan}} is selected to be the player character, Lyra meets him in [[New Bark Town]] at the start of the game. In this particular scene, she is seen with a {{TP|Lyra|Marill}}. Her role in the storyline of HeartGold and SoulSilver is similar to that of {{ga|Lucas}}/{{ga|Dawn}} in {{game2|Diamond|Pearl|Platinum}} if they are not chosen as the player character, while Ethan takes this place if she is selected as the player. She teaches the player how to catch Pokémon on {{rt|29|Johto}} (replacing the [[Dude]] from {{3v2|Gold|Silver|Crystal}}).

When called from certain locations, Lyra will mention that something will happen if the player takes a certain Pokémon there.

Shortly after the release of {{game|HeartGold and SoulSilver|s}}, an {{an|Lyra|anime counterpart}} of Lyra appeared in the episodes from ''[[DP143|An Egg Scramble!]]'' to ''[[DP147|Bagged Then Tagged!]]''. Much as with {{an|May}} and {{an|Dawn}}, she shares both her English and Japanese names with the player character she is based on.

==Trivia==

* Before her official name was revealed, many fans referred to her as '''Soul''' (Japanese: '''ソウル''' ''Soul''), based on [[Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver Versions|Pokémon SoulSilver]], in similar style to {{ga|Leaf}}.

* Lyra shares many of her Japanese default names with {{ga|Leaf}} and {{ga|Dawn}}. She also shares all of {{ga|Kris}}'s default Japanese names.

* Occasionally, Lyra will call and claim that her {{p|Marill}} evolved into {{p|Azumarill}}. Upon meeting her again, however, she will still have a Marill. This mix-up is due to a translation error: In the Japanese version, she talks of how she would be surprised ''if'' she were to turn around on a whim while walking about and find her Marill in the process of evolving, or having evolved, into an Azumarill. She follows that thought up with: "But that would never happen!"

Like her Japanese name, Lyra's international names are all derived from musical instruments.
