List of icons

Generation I games

In Pokémon Red, Green and Blue there are ten unique Pokémon icons, internally numbered from 0 to 9. In Pokémon Yellow, Pikachu and Raichu get a new eleventh icon (MS Clefairy I.png025 I OD.png), and the icons are numbered from 0 to 10.

In all Generation I games, Snorlax has its own overworld sprite 143 I OD.png, but it still displayed in the party as the generic sprite MS Rhydon I.png shared by several Pokémon.

In Pokémon Yellow, the newly introduced Pikachu icon appears both in the party and the overworld. Some other Pokémon have different sprites when they are seen in the overworld, but they still use the sprites from earlier games when they are in the player's party:

In all Generation I games, when most Pokémon use Surf outside of battle, the player controls a generic sprite MS Aquatic I.png while travelling on water. However, when a Pikachu uses this move in Pokémon Yellow, the player controls a surfing Pikachu sprite 025 I Surfing OD.png instead.

Generation II games

In Generation II, there are 38 unique Pokémon icons. They are internally numbered from 1 to 38, unlike the previous generation, which started from from 0. There are also some additional Pokémon sprites that are only seen in the overworld.

In this generation, the Pokémon seen in the overworld such as the in-game event wild Lapras, Sudowoodo, Lugia, Ho-Oh, etc. have their own color palettes, but once caught they all share the same color palette, as seen in the party, nickname, and trade screens.

In addition to Snorlax's party icon, there is also a larger Snorlax sprite 143 II OD.png used when it appears in the overworld.

In Pokémon Gold and Silver, the Legendary beasts appear together in the overworld as three identical MS Animal II.png sprites, each with their own color palette before they are caught. In Pokémon Crystal, they appear in the overworld as the three separate sprites 243 C OD.png244 C OD.png245 C OD.png, but once caught they still use only the MS Animal II.png sprite.

In Pokémon Crystal, Celebi appears in the overworld with the sprite 251 II OD.png in the Ilex Forest event, but once caught it appears as the MS Human II.png sprite.

Some Generation II icons are based on similar icons from Generation I slots:

  • MS Poliwag II.pngMS Jigglypuff II.pngMS Diglett II.png are based on Celadon Game Corner Poliwag Blue.pngCeladon Game Corner Jigglypuff Blue.pngCeladon Game Corner Diglett Blue.png from slots in Pokémon Blue
  • MS Fish II.png is based on Celadon Game Corner Fish Red.png from slots in Pokémon Red
  • MS Gengar II.pngMS Artificial II.png are based on Celadon Game Corner Ghost Green.pngCeladon Game Corner Voltorb Green.png from slots in Pokémon Green

In this generation, some Pokémon dolls are similar to the Pokémon party icons except they are not animated in the game: Doll Bulbasaur II.pngDoll Charmander II.pngDoll Clefairy II.pngDoll Diglett II.pngDoll Gengar II.pngDoll Bulbasaur II.pngDoll Geodude II.pngDoll Grimer II.pngDoll Jigglypuff II.pngDoll Machop II.pngDoll Magikarp II.pngDoll Poliwag II.pngDoll Shellder II.pngDoll Bulbasaur II.pngDoll Squirtle II.pngDoll Staryu II.pngDoll Tentacool II.pngDoll Unown II.pngDoll Voltorb II.pngDoll Weedle II.png. The Pikachu doll Doll Pikachu II.png resembles the Pikachu sprite 025 I OD.png from Pokémon Yellow instead, while the Surf Pikachu doll Doll Surf Pikachu II.png resembles the surfing Pikachu sprite from both Yellow and the Generation II games.

There are also three larger dolls Doll Big Lapras II.pngDoll Big Onix II.pngDoll Big Snorlax II.png for Lapras, Onix, and Snorlax.
