History

Pre-series

Koharu and her family

As seen in SS001, when she was six, Koharu invited her childhood friend Go to Professor Oak's Pokémon Summer Camp with her. During their visit in Pallet Town, Koharu and Go encountered the Mythical Pokémon Mew. The two chased after the unknown Pokémon, but it eventually got away in the aftermath of a baby Kangaskhan rescue. Professor Oak later told them the Pokémon they saw was most likely the Mythical Pokémon Mew.

New series

In SS002, a few years later, Koharu is introduced during the opening of the Sakuragi Institute, she finds Ash passed out after Yamper knocks him down with an Electric Type attack, but discreetly leaves Ash lying on the stairs. She is formally introduced to Ash when she hands over the school work to Go.

In SS011, the students in Koharu's class participated in an exercise where they discussed their dreams for the future. Koharu became frustrated when her classmates immediately assumed she wanted to be a Pokémon Professor purely because her father is one. She received encouragement from Yoshino, who told Koharu that she was still young and had plenty of time to decide what she wanted to do with her life. Later, Koharu returned to the laboratory only to find it under attack by a wild Gengar. By commanding Yamper to battle for the first time, Koharu successfully drove Gengar out of the building.

Character

Koharu is overly cautious and takes a realistic approach to life. She finds Go's confidence and big ideas to be irritating, and often reminds her friend to mind his manners. She appears distant and indifferent to others, as seen when she tends to ignore Ash.

Koharu's aloofness appears to stem from her own uncertainty of what goals she wants to pursue, and she is bothered by her classmates assuming she will follow her father's footsteps and become a Pokémon researcher, and that she must be a good battler. After a conversation with her mother and working together with Yamper to defeat an attacking Gengar, Koharu appears to grow closer to her Pokémon and become more certain of herself.

Yamper
Yamper is Koharu's only known Pokémon. It typically stays at home or at the Sakuragi Institute while Koharu goes to school. Yamper was first seen waiting in front of the Institute to greet its Trainer on her way home from school, but it met with Ash and Pikachu instead. Yamper gave the overly-curious Ash a jolt, but greeted Pikachu amicably with a lick on his cheek. Afterwards, it saw its Trainer, who was confused by the scene, and followed her home.

In SS009, Yamper helped Ash and Go look for the Gengar haunting the Institute, but it soon stopped to greet Koharu. Gengar soon attacked Koharu, but Yamper jumped in to take the hit for her, getting hurt in the process. Professor Sakuragi tried to get Yamper to fight back, but he discovered it was too focused on protecting Koharu to hear him. It was only able to fight back when Koharu gathered her courage and told Yamper to use Spark herself.

According to Sōta, Yamper won't accept any food unless it comes from Koharu, and it likes her the most despite her somewhat aloof attitude.

Yamper's only known move is Spark.

Koharu debuted in SSM01. She hoped to meet Go at the unveiling of the Sakuragi Laboratory, but he did not show up. Instead, she encountered Ash, but his enthusiasm at seeing her Yamper scared her off. Later, she watched as Professor Sakuragi asked Ash and Go to become his research assistants.
