Kiawe (Japanese: カキ Kaki) is the Trial Captain of Akala Island's Wela Volcano Park. He specializes in Fire-type Pokémon.

Background
Website Blurb: "Kiawe is a captain whose expertise is in Fire-type Pokémon. Together with his Marowak, he studies the traditional dances that have been passed down in the Alola region."
Kiawe appears in Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon as a Trial Captain who provides guidance to trial-goers. With his Marowak, Kiawe studies and performs traditional dances from Alola. He says that his trials are different from the others and are meant to test the player's observation. The player can sleep in his bed in Paniola Town, the caption, "the bed looks fresh and clean, but you can still detect a faint whiff of...sweat? Kiawe appears to be good friends with the other Trial Captains on Akala Island, Mallow and Lana. He gave a man living in Mallow's restaurant a Magmar, to encourage him to become a real iron chef.
Story
Kiawe first appears at the Battle Royal Dome in Royal Avenue, enjoying the Battle Royal that the player had participated in, hoping they would bring the same heat to their upcoming trial. At Wela Volcano Park, Kiawe then appears at the top of the volcano, ready for the player to take on the trial. In Kiawe's trial, he asks the player to identify the difference between two dances. After defeat of the Totem Salazzle, he will provide a Charizard on the player's Ride Pager to have access to Charizard Glide.
Kiawe reappears in Mallow's trial, providing her with a Thick Club used for stirring and mashing the food to summon Totem Lurantis.
At the end of the game, Kiawe appears with the rest of the Trial Captains at the festival in Iki Town after the player has become Champion. When he isn't performing dance as entertainment, he is seen hanging around Lana and Mallow. In the credits of Sun and Moon, a photograph taken by the player character is shown. Kiawe is shown performing a traditional Alolan dance with his Marowak inside a building at Paniola Town.
Post-game and side quest
In a side quest in Pokémon Sun, after defeating Olivia, the player can find Kiawe in his room at Paniola Town during the night. Upon speaking with him, he will immediately leave for the Thrifty Megamart at the Royal Avenue. Once the player arrives, Kiawe will be seen briefly speaking with his boss before requesting for a battle with the player. After his defeat, he states that he had just been fired from his part-time job, and he mentions his wish to travel to another region to further his studies for dancing. Shortly after telling his story, he will award the player the Reverent battle style.
He can be encountered at the Battle Tree as a possible opponent or Multi Battle partner in Pokémon Sun.
Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon
Story
Kiawe has very few differences between Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon compared to Sun and Moon, retaining mainly the same role as he did in the original titles. Like in the original games, Kiawe is first met in the Battle Royal Dome. At Wela Volcano Park, Kiawe's trial on observation is retained, however, the Totem Pokémon that Kiawe has trained is an Alolan Marowak, rather than a Salazzle. He reappears in Mallow's trial the same way as he did in Sun and Moon.
Kiawe is met again during Mina's trial in both Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, giving the player a Red Petal after defeating him and Hiker David. During this encounter, it's also revealed that Kiawe is considering to make David his successor as a Trial Captain, although David is more interested in dancing. Afterwards, Kiawe will offer to escort the player to Hokulani Observatory to meet Sophocles and get the next petal.
Post-game
In a side quest exclusive to Ultra Sun, after the player has became champion, they can find him in his room back in Paniola Town like they did back in Pokémon Sun. This sequence is nearly identical to that of Pokémon Sun, however his Pokémon will be at higher level, fully evolved and infused with a Firium Z Z-Crystal, he grants the battle style like in Sun. In Ultra Sun He appears once again in the Battle Tree as an opponent and battle partner with the same Pokémon from Sun.

Kiawe debuted in Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon. He is a student at the Pokémon School of Melemele Island and one of Ash's rivals and former classmates. He owns a Z-Ring and is very gruff compared to his classmates. Besides attending school, he provides a helping hand at his family's farm, making deliveries between islands with his Charizard. He also reappeared in Pokémon Journeys: The Series.

In the manga
Pokémon Adventures
Kiawe debuted in Going Ashore and Neighboring Akala Island. He, Mallow, and Lana traveled to Heahea City to meet Sun, a boy approved to take part in the island challenge. Curious about whether or not Sun was worthy enough to do the island challenge, Kiawe challenged him to a short battle. Though the match ended without a winner, Kiawe bonded with Sun and accepted him as a trialgoer. Lana was still reluctant, so she gave Sun the task of defeating the Totem Pokémon of Brooklet Hill while Kiawe left to do his part-time job.
In Homecoming and the Brilliant Professional Golfer, Mallow received a call from Kiawe, who had been attacked by someone looking for the Ruins of Life. Sun, Moon, Mallow, and Lana went to Memorial Hill, where they found an injured Kiawe and some Team Skull Grunts. Mallow and Lana stayed behind to battle the Grunts while the others went to protect Tapu Lele from Gladion, the one who assaulted Kiawe. After arriving, Kiawe told Sun how to use Z-Moves and helped him master the pose for Inferno Overdrive. Due to not having a Z-Ring, Sun attempted to borrow Kiawe's, but it was destroyed by Gladion's Type: Null before he could take it. Although Gladion claimed Sun wouldn't have won even with the Z-Move, a voice appeared, claiming that Gladion wouldn't have destroyed the Z-Ring if he believed that. The voice was revealed to be Kahili, who had her Pokémon distract Type: Null before delivering Sun his own Z-Ring.
In Unleashing the Incredible Z-Move, Sun on Dollar successfully used Inferno Overdrive on Gladion's Type; Null, forcing him to recall it. Declaring Tapu Lele to be of no use to him, Gladion gave on it and left. Afterward, Tapu Lele awakened and asked Kiawe and the others to battle it as thanks for helping it. The four sent out their Pokémon to face the guardian deity, but were outclassed by its strength. Sun, refusing to give up, managed to get a hit in after his Litten, Dollar evolved into a Torracat. Acknowledging their determination, Tapu Lele flew off. Kiawe, Sun, and Moon then returned to Mallow and Lana, who had defeated the Grunts.
In Flash and Cosmog's Secret, Kiawe and the others met at Mallow's family restaurant, where they talked to Professor Kukui's wife, Professor Burnet, over a video phone. After suspecting Team Skull may be related to the Ultra Wormholes appearing around Alola, Lana suggested infiltrating Team Skull's base in Po Town to get answers. Kiawe and Mallow reluctantly agreed, but the former suggested asking Ilima and Acerola to help them.
In A Raid and Po Town, Kiawe, Mallow, Lana, Acerola, Ilima, and Hau arrived at Po Town. Their presence alerted Team Skull's boss, Guzma, who demanded to know why his base was being invaded. When the Captains revealed they only wanted to talk, Guzma agreed on the condition they made it to him first. He then summoned a Pheromosa, Celesteela, and Guzzlord and had them attack the Captains and Hau. Despite their best efforts, Kiawe and the others were completely outmatched by the rampaging beasts.
In Confusion and Monsters from Another World, Sun arrived at Po Town, only to get caught up in the commotion. Annoyed the Captains were still fighting, Guzma revealed a Cosmog and had it open more wormholes. Gladion appeared, demanding to know where Guzma got the Cosmog and Ultra Beasts from. Revealing his true aim is to destroy Ultra Beasts, Gladion battled the beasts Guzma summoned with his Type: Null. To everyone's shock, Gladion also revealed the Aether Foundation's president, Lusamine, was the one who gave Guzma Cosmog as part of her plan to create a paradise filled with nothing but Ultra Beasts and herself. Eventually, the beasts broke out of Po Town's barrier, allowing them to wreak havoc on all of Ula'ula Island. Kiawe and the other Captains headed off to various locations to evacuate any innocent civilians caught in the beasts' attacks.
In Adventure in the Dark Dimension, the Trial Captains and island kahunas were revealed to have spent six months on Exeggutor Island training to prepare for another clash with the Ultra Beasts. After their training was finished, Kiawe received a repaired Z-Ring from Olivia. Sophocles and Molayne took everyone to Mount Lanakila, where a wormhole had opened up earlier. Shortly after they arrived, their ship was attacked by a group of Aether Foundation Employees and their Ultra Beasts. With the Z-Moves they had acquired, Kiawe and the others managed to defeat the Ultra Beasts.
Several months later, Kiawe continued his goal of saving money so that he could study abroad. He partnered with Sun, joining his delivery service as a courier along with two former Team Skull Grunts.

Kiawe was introduced as a Supporter card in the Pokémon Trading Card Game during the English Sun & Moon Series (the Japanese SM Era). It was first released in the Japanese To Have Seen the Battle Rainbow expansion before debuting in English in the Burning Shadows expansion, with an illustration based on the Ken Sugimori artwork of the character. It was also released as a Full Art card in To Have Seen the Battle Rainbow and Burning Shadows, with an illustration by Naoki Saito. It allows the player to search their deck for up to 4 Fire Energy cards and attach them to 1 of their Pokémon. The player then shuffles their deck and their turn ends.
