Pokémon Emerald

Sootopolis Gym
  • Before battle
"Let me ask you. Did you know? Ah, I should not be so coy. It was I who taught Wallace everything there is to know about Pokémon. Once, I had given up my position as the Gym Leader. In my place, I had entrusted Wallace with the Gym. However, a compelling reason arose for me to make a comeback. Ah, but enough chatter. Let us begin our match, shall we? Please, you shall bear witness to our artistry. A grand illusion of water sculpted by Pokémon and myself!"
  • Being defeated
"Ahahaha, excellent! Very well, you are the winner. From you, I sense the brilliant shine of skill that will overcome all. However, compared with me or even Wallace, you are lacking in elegance. Perhaps I should make you a loan of my outfit? ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... Hahaha, I merely jest! Rather than my clothes, I shall reward you with this, the Rain Badge."
  • After being defeated
"Having the Rain Badge shall assure you the full obedience of all your Pokémon to your every command. The Rain Badge also allows the use of the HM move Waterfall to scale walls of cascading water. And, so that you never forget the battle we shared, take this..."
"The Technical Machine I handed you contains Water Pulse. In use, it will occasionally confuse the target with ultrasonic waves."
  • If talked to once again and player skipped Fortree Gym
"There remains but one Badge to obtain in Hoenn. If you wish to challenge the Pokémon League, you must obtain the last Badge from the Gym in Fortree.
  • If all 8 Badges are collected
"The Trainers who have gathered all the Gym Badges of Hoenn should make way to the ultimate destination. The Pokémon League. Travel to the easternmost reaches of Hoenn, to the island of Ever Grande. There, you shall find the Pokémon League."
Match Call
  • After registering him
"Hmm... <Player>... Was it? Our battle together — it brought to me memories of when I first encountered Wallace. Perhaps you are a genius who may yet surpass Wallace!"
  • After defeating Champion, before rematch is available
"Fufu... <Player>... You've finally achieved your goal. My eye for appraising talent wasn't mistaken... I wish for another chance to meet you, for you have scaled the peak of power and prestige."
  • When rematch is available
"Hoho... <Player>... Our Sootopolis Gym has finally reopened. If you wish to see me, you are welcome to visit anytime."
  • After a rematch
"<Player>... Like the finest music, the battles we made together strikes chords of inspiration in my heart... When I close my eyes, I see visions of you soaring with the melody..."
Rematch
  • Before battle
"Ah, this Gym had returned to its usual state of serenity... But our young typhoon has returned to put us to the test again! Well, my friend, most certainly! I shall be delighted to dance with you as often as you wish!"
  • Being defeated
"Ahahaha, you are the winner! You have defeated me again!"
  • After being defeated
"If I told you to become my apprentice, you will refuse, I am sure. I would like to make a gift of my coat to you. But again, you will refuse. I imagine that to be so. And that, my friend, is a certain sign of nobility!"

Juan in the anime

Juan debuted in The Great Eight Fate!, where he was first seen putting on a show with his Pokémon at the inauguration of an art piece in Sootopolis City. Impressed by how Juan's Pokémon took the stage, May commented that Juan could be a great Coordinator and that she had never seen someone using Water-type attacks in such a beautiful and creative manner. Following his water show, Team Rocket appeared to try to steal Juan's Pokémon. Juan initially mistook them for artists, but when Ash and his friends told him that they were a trio of thieves, he easily sent them blasting off.

After that, Ash challenged him to a Gym battle, which Juan accepted. He then offered the group a ride to the Sootopolis Gym on his boat, where May complimented Juan for his performance. Juan then revealed that he was once a Pokémon Coordinator. After winning the five required Ribbons, he entered the Grand Festival and won with the help of Milotic and the others, earning the Ribbon Cup and receiving the title of Top Coordinator.

Juan also explained how he ended up specializing in Water-type Pokémon, revealing that he admired their streamlined physiques and their weakness to Electric-type moves. Max became intrigued by Juan liking a weakness, and Juan explained that, throughout his years competing in Pokémon Contests, he learned that being close to making a mistake is one of the best ways to add appeal to a Contest Battle. He added that he has learned to wait for attacks, then defend from them accordingly.

When they got to the Gym, Juan was welcomed by his butler and assistant, Sebastian, who informed Ash about the Gym rules. In order to test his challengers and make sure that they are ready to compete in the Hoenn League Championships, Juan provides Trainers with a unique challenge: the Gym battle is divided into four rounds, with the first one being a Double Battle held in a large swimming pool, while the other three rounds consist of one-on-one battles conducted on a battlefield resembling a lake surrounded by land. Ash was able to overcome the obstacles imposed by Juan, and in Eight Ain't Enough, he succeeded in defeating Juan's ace Pokémon, Milotic, thus winning the Rain Badge and qualifying for the Ever Grande Conference.

Juan reappeared in a flashback in Playing The Leveling Field!.

Milotic
Milotic debuted in The Great Eight Fate, where it was first used in a water exhibition. It also won in a battle against Team Rocket. Milotic is Juan's strongest and most experienced Pokémon, having helped Juan in his career as a Coordinator by winning many Pokémon Contests years ago. With the help of Milotic, Juan was able to win the Grand Festival, earning the Ribbon Cup and the title of Top Coordinator. Nowadays, Milotic uses all of its experience against challengers who come to the Sootopolis Gym.

Juan used Milotic as his final Pokémon in the Gym battle against Ash. With its elegant grace and power, Milotic was able to gain the upper hand against Ash. It defeated Ash's Swellow with Hydro Pump and Twister, then put up a good fight against Pikachu thanks to its ability to Recover from Electric attacks. It was also able to draw in Pikachu's Thunder with Iron Tail. However, Pikachu pulled Milotic below the water and used Thunder to defeat it, thus earning Ash the Rain Badge.

Milotic's known moves are Twister, Hydro Pump, Iron Tail, and Recover.

Luvdisc
Luvdisc first appeared in The Great Eight Fate!, where it put on a dazzling performance with Juan's other Pokémon. It was later captured by Team Rocket, but was freed.

During the second round of his battle with Ash, Juan chose Luvdisc against Grovyle. Luvdisc started out with Water Pulse, but Grovyle dodged in time and countered with Leaf Blade. Luvdisc, however, was fast enough to dodge that attack and used Sweet Kiss, confusing Grovyle. Grovyle hit itself in its confusion, and Luvdisc finished it off with Water Gun, which resulted in a loss for Grovyle despite the type advantage. Ash switched back to Corphish. The two Pokémon kept dodging each other's attacks until Luvdisc dived underwater and Ash ordered Corphish to hit the water with Crabhammer. Corphish's attack sprayed the battlefield with water, simulating heavy rain, which activated Luvdisc's Ability, Swift Swim, allowing it to move even faster than before. Eventually, Corphish managed to hit Luvdisc with another Crabhammer, taking it out of the battle.

Luvdisc's known moves are Water Pulse, Sweet Kiss, and Water Gun, and its Ability is Swift Swim.

It then tried to hit Pikachu with Aurora Beam, but Pikachu dodged. When Ash switched Snorunt for Corphish and attacked with Bubble Beam, Sealeo dived into the water and tried hitting Pikachu again, but once again, Pikachu dodged. After Sealeo was left alone against both of Ash's Pokémon, it used Ice Ball repeatedly and almost won the battle, but was eventually taken down by Corphish's Crabhammer.

History

Past

Juan was once Wallace's mentor and the Sootopolis Gym Leader. Despite Wallace winning the Pokémon League, he rejected the title of Champion to take over the Sootopolis Gym after his master.

Ruby & Sapphire arc

During the battle between Groudon and Kyogre, Wallace was forced to take up the title of Champion, so Juan took up the title as Gym Leader once again.

Juan first appeared on Mirage Island with Tate and Liza. He greeted Ruby and Sapphire and informed them that he would be training them to prepare for their upcoming battle with Groudon and Kyogre. He had Tate and Liza train Ruby and Sapphire in the ways of Double Battles so that they may use combination techniques to aid them in their fight. Juan himself trained the two mentally, so that their minds would not be taken over by the Red and Blue Orbs like Maxie and Archie had been. When the time for Ruby and Sapphire to leave had come, Juan stayed behind so that he may safely guide them away from Mirage Island.

Juan in the thirteenth chapter

After both Team Magma and Team Aqua are defeated and Groudon and Kyogre have returned to their deep slumber, Juan celebrated the victory with his allies and thanked Sapphire and Ruby for their assistance in the battle.

Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire arc

Juan, along with the Hoenn Gym Leaders and Elite Four, is called to Sootopolis City to assist in stopping a meteoroid threatening to destroy the planet.

Character

As Wallace's former mentor, Juan is respected by Ruby, who calls him "Grand Master" (大師匠, dai shishou).

Pokémon

This listing is for Juan's Pokémon in the Pokémon Adventures manga.

Kingdra
Kingdra is Juan's first known Pokémon. It was first used to show Ruby and Sapphire how the battle between Groudon and Kyogre was going with a Water Screen. When Ruby attacked Juan to test if he really was Wallace's master, Kingdra was used to defend its Trainer, which quelled Ruby's doubts. When the time had come for Ruby and Sapphire to leave, Kingdra shot water fireworks into the air to signal when it was time for them to exit.

Kingdra's only known move is Water Pulse.

Trivia

  • In Emerald, Juan is the only Gym Leader whose highest-leveled Pokémon, Kingdra, is from a previous generation.
  • Juan's team in the anime is the same team Wallace uses in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire.
    • Juan is the only Hoenn Gym Leader not to be shown with the same team in the anime as in the games (while some Gym Leaders had Pokémon evolve or join their team, all the previous leaders were shown with the same team as their game counterparts at one point). Instead, Juan has a Milotic from Wallace's appearance in the anime.
  • Juan is the only Gym Leader to not have a VS. sprite or artwork, because he appeared only in Pokémon Emerald and the Pokémon World Tournament.
  • Juan is similar to Fantina in that both speak French (Juan does so in the original Japanese version and Chuang Yi's English translation of Pokémon Adventures), and both are Coordinators and Gym Leaders.
    • In the VIZ Media version he uses Spanish phrases instead, likely due to the Spanish origins of his name.
