Defensively, the Ice-type is considered a poor type, only bearing a resistance to one-even though useful-type (itself) and being weak to four types, although two of those types are not very common. This disadvantage in defensive weaknesses is made up somewhat, since most Ice-types have a secondary type that give them resistances and/or immunities.

Offensively, the Ice-type is considered the best attacking type of all, together with Ground. It is the only type truely effective against the {{type2|Dragon}}, as the only weakness of Dragons besides Ice is Dragon itself, which does not weaken any other type, giving little reason to use them without STAB, meaning, the only other counters to Dragons are other Dragons. It also coveres the very common {{t|Flying}}- and {{type2|Grass}}s, and also Ground, which is, as said, the other best attacking type. X4 Weaknesses to Ice are very common (expecially among Dragons), while the only Pokémon that have a X1/4 resistiance to Ice and are not Ice-types themselfs are Empoleon and Heatran, although neither would enjoy Mamoswine's Earthquake. There is no type immune to Ice, which gives it an advantage over the other best attacking type, Ground, which does not effect Flying-types, a very common type to see, and Pokémon with the Levitate trait.

Quite expectedly, Ice and Ground, the two best attacking types, cover one another very well, what makes Mamoswine's type combination very useful for offensive sets. Ice and Electric are also knowen to creat a good combination, also knowen as "BoltBeam" (Thunderbolt and Ice Beam), that only Magnezone, Lanturn (with Volt Absorb) and Shedinja resists. That makes Ice very useful on sweepers, both physical and special.
